Collins has been exactly what the Nets expected him to be in his few weeks with the team, and that's a great thing |
This isn't very surprising at all, but–according to Ohm Youngmisuk and Marc Stein of ESPN.com–the Brooklyn Nets have decided to sign Jason Collins for the rest of this season when his 2nd and final 10-day contract expires Saturday.
When Brooklyn first signed Collins a few weeks ago to his first 10-day deal, it was widely assumed he would eventually get picked up for the rest of the year, which was made official today. The Nets are 7-2 since they signed him on February 23rd, and beat the Lakers in LA later that day making NBA and American professional sports history.
He may not be lighting up the scoreboard in any category, other than fouls, but the Stanford alum has played some great interior defense for a Nets team that was sorely lacking in that department before he arrived. Additionally, he gives the team six fouls every night, and likes to utilize as many of those as he can (five points and 18 personal fouls in nine games). And you can't count out the incredibly helpful locker room presence he provides as a longtime NBA veteran who was a New Jersey Net with Jason Kidd and made two NBA Finals.
It has been great for Jason to be on the Nets for the nearly three weeks he has been on the team, and it's even better he'll be here in Brooklyn through the playoffs.
