Whoever is tabbed to be the next head coach of the 49ers will get all the say so in determining the immediate future of quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Now that Sean Payton has decided to stay in New Orleans, the coaching search is wide open.
We start with the recently fired Chip Kelly, who has already reached out to the 49ers to express interest in the job.
Chip Kelly's camp has reached out to 49ers to express interest in their HC opening, per league source. 49ers likely to at least consider it.

There’s almost no doubt, that if Kelly takes over as head coach, that Colin Kaepernick stays. It makes perfect sense. Kelly’s offense suits Kaepernick’s strengths, and his running ability mirrors that to the type of QBs that Chip had at Oregon (Jeremiah Masoli, Darron Thomas, and Marcus Mariota).
If it’s anybody other than Chip, it appears Kaepernick is all but done in San Francisco.
Coaches and QBs are like peas in a pod, and their names stretch across time; Montana-Walsh, Aikman-Jimmy Johnson, Bradshaw-Knoll, Eli -Coughlin, Peyton-Dungy, Staubach-Landry, Starr-Lombari, and Brady-Belichick to name a few.
A new coach will no doubt, want to bring in his own QB, after all, this is the NFL, and longevity for head coaches is a priority.
It is difficult to see anybody but Chip Kelly keeping Colin Kaepernick as their QB in 2016. The more likely scenario includes brining in a new coach, followed by the selection of a QB early in the draft, or bringing in a free agent to compete with Blaine Gabbert.
