Just a quick blog news post — over the past few months, you may have noticed a new commenting system slowly being tested and rolled out across the Bloguin network. Today, the new LiveFyre commenting system was installed on The Brewers Bar, and it’s really freaking cool.
Selfishly, the thing I’m most excited about is the fact that this software actually blocks spam comments, so I won’t have to spend time every morning deleting offers for Coach bags. But there’s a lot of other cool stuff going on that benefits you all as readers:
1. Quick-and-Easy Sign-Ins: To comment, you can either register with LiveFyre or simply sign in with your Twitter or Facebook account. Personally, I synced my account up with Twitter, and all it took was a few clicks. Once you’re registered, you’re registered across the entire system — no need for multiple accounts for different blogs.
To create an account, click on the generic gray person below. You’ll be prompted to either sign in/register with LiveFyre or sign in using your Twitter/Facebook account. If you choose the latter option, it’ll ask you to sign in to those services. After that, you should be good to go. I believe there are also options to remember your sign-in info, so you shouldn’t have to keep logging in every time you want to comment.
2. Full Multimedia Support: If you want to add a picture or a video to your comment, all you have to do is paste the URL into the comment box, and the media will be embedded for you…no need to mess around with the HTML code. Flickr, Twitpic, tinypic, and imgur are supported for pics, while Youtube and Vimeo are supported for video.
3. Nested Replies: With the old system, it was hard to tell when someone was responding to an earlier comment. With LiveFyre, you can reply directly to individual comments, and your comment will appear nested underneath the one to which you’re responding. It’s a much cleaner look, and probably one you’re more familiar with if you visit blogs on other networks.
4. Real-Time Updates: No need to refresh the page to view new comments. When one is posted, it will automatically appear on your screen, and I believe you’ll have a little box pop up on the screen notifying you. If you have to click away from the page but still want to keep up with the conversation, you can sign up for e-mail notifications as well.
Hopefully, this new system will make it easier to comment, leading to more of them and expanded discussion on the blog posts. Feel free to experiment below! If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and we’ll try to figure this thing out together.
