New Orleans Hornets to become… the Pelicans?

“Look at the pelican fly. Come on pelican!”

The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.

New Orleans Pelicans Schedule

The Hornets owner, Tom Benson, has wanted to change the name of the team since he bought them team on April 14. He also happens to own the rights to the nickname Pelicans. The Hornets also considered the nicknames Krewe (groups of costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) and Brass.

Gayle Benson, Benson’s wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold. I have no problem with the color change but it’ll be pretty similar to the Cleveland Cavaliers color scheme during the LeBron James era.

Now back to the important thing and it needs to be said. PELICANS! REALLY!? I get that the pelican is the state bird, but come on. Can anyone imagine going to New Orleans Arena, cheering your hometown team and then the chants start. “Let’s Go Pelicans!” Second, who would own the rights to a nickname like the pelicans? Aren’t there better nicknames to try to get the rights for?

The best choice among the three is the Krewe.  Krewe gives the team a great chant, a cool sounding nickname (I’m going to the Krewe’s game tonight) and is the spirit of New Orleans. Brass would’ve been better as well, with the connections being the brass in an orchestra. If it were up to me, I would make the Utah Jazz and New Orleans to trade nicknames and force Utah to come up with their own nickname. (Utah Peaks? Utah Saints?)

It’s gonna take a while for the basketball community to get use to the name change, that is after every joke possible is made about it.

If Pelicans have anything going for them… it’s this video…

I guess you shouldn’t make them angry.
