New WiFi network coming to Camp Randall this fall

In today’s world, most can’t live without pulling out their phones and tweeting or posting selfies (can we ban that word?) on instagram while attending sporting events. We all know how painful it is to simply send out a simple text message when 90,000 people are jamming WiFi and cell networks.

Worry no more at Camp Randall this fall, as Wisconsin’s athletic department is partnering with AT&T to create a new high density WiFi network and IPTV solution for Camp Randall stadium this fall.

“We are thrilled with our collaboration with AT&T in enhancing the game-day fan experience at Camp Randall Stadium,” said UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez in a statement released by the athletic department. “Along with AT&T, we are creating a high standard for connectivity in our stadium and providing a wide variety of additional content to our fans. We want Badger football fans to have a memorable experience in our venue and this project will go a long way toward assisting us.”

But, for those who like to chat away with friends or post away on Twitter/Facebook, etc. this is major news indeed.

AT&T will help UW deploy a high density Wi-Fi network which will allow fans to connect in the stands, suites, clubs, ticketing, media and concession stand areas via 10 Gigabit switches, accompanying wireless controllers and more than 750 access points throughout the stadium and outlying areas.

The result will be an enhanced Wi-Fi system for a better network experience to surf the Internet, check scores and share on social media sites in the 80,000-plus seat venue.

“In-stadium connectivity is becoming an essential component of the game-day experience at stadiums across the country,” said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin. “Whether fans are using mobile apps, texting, tweeting, checking email or surfing the Internet, they are looking for enhanced connectivity. We are excited to work with the University of Wisconsin to enhance the experience at Camp Randall for all Badger fans, students and alumni.”

What may be the most interesting change is the IPTV solution that is coming to Camp Randall, because it has the chance to really change how video content is distributed throughout the stadium.

The IPTV solution will transform the look and feel of Camp Randall through an innovative video and digital content distribution solution on nearly 700 high definition screens. It will provide the university with the ability to centrally manage and deliver customized video, team, sponsor and relevant event information to any combination of monitors throughout the venue; create unique interactive opportunities to engage fans; and feature expanded content on three video walls placed throughout the venue.

Oh, and for all of you old-fashioned fans that actually enjoy going to the game to watch and cheer what is happening on the field…that will still be there among the increasing activity surrounding the game. So, come this fall there appears to be options available to all groups of fans—and that will be a plus.
