New Year’s Day Links

There are enough stories today for me to provide links.

Let’s get to them.

First, Newsday’s Neil Best has a hodgepodge column talking about several subjects including Fox Sports’ Jimmy Johnson working the BCS and Fox NFL Sunday this week and the NHL Winter Classic.

The Sports Media Watch has some predictions for 2008. Also, Paulsen has his sports media story of 2007 and the runners-up.

Jim Williams of the DC/Baltimore Examiner previews today’s college bowl action and the NHL Outdoor Game.

Bob Holt of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette writes about Pat Summerall calling today’s Cotton Bowl on Fox.

Dave Del Grande of the Oakland Tribune says he would like to fix the BCS, not trash it altogether.

Ray Frager of the Baltimore Sun writes in his Medium Well blog that TV could be in Brian Billick’s future.

Leonard Shapiro of the Washington Post says the NFL made the right move putting the Pats-Giants game on network TV, but knowing full well the league was staring political pressure in the face.

George M. Thomas of the Akron Beacon Journal says the winner in the Patriots-Giants game on network TV was not the fans, but the NFL itself.

In an amazing development, William Houston of the Toronto Globe and Mail writes that Patriots-Giants on TSN, CTV and RDS even outdrew Hockey Night in Canada on CBC.

Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch writes that NBC has its ratings work cut out for it today with the NHL Winter Classic pitted against the college bowls.

Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star says putting the NHL Outdoor Game in New York City would have been better marketing-wise.

Jeffrey Flanagan of the Kansas City Star writes about a local sports anchor who’s leaving town after just six months on the job.

Page Six of the New York Post reports on a new book that Deadspin’s Will Leitch is publishing through Harper Collins on the horrific antics by ESPN personalities.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News reports that former Dallas Cowboys WR and ESPN NFL analyst Michael Irvin has landed a radio gig.

Not bad for a holiday. Plenty of links today. I’m still working on Amazing Race episode recaps. I’ll be back later.
