If I was a betting man, I’d wager that there are at least a dozen or two bars named “Murphy’s” in New York City.
But a bar called “Daniel Murphy’s”? This might be a first.
Monday, the folks from Foley’s NY Pub and Restaurant renamed their popular bar after the New York Mets record-breaking second baseman.
“No one in the history of this great sport has accomplished what Daniel Murphy has this postseason,” owner Shaun Clancy said via email. “Renaming our restaurant after him is a way of tipping our cap to him in honor of his achievements and to the excitement that he has brought to this city.”
In addition to the name change, the pub has also added a new signature dish to its menu. The Chicken Murphy (chicken breast, Italian sausage, potatoes and sliced cherry peppers) will be available throughout the postseason. And because you were curious, no…this isn’t the first dish they’ve named after a player. Sean Casey, David Wright, David Robertson and Joe McEwing are the others.
Lastly, Murphy has already been added to the ballot for possible 2016 Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame induction. The rest of the candidates will be announced on St. Patrick’s Day next year.
