New Brewers’ pitcher should be based on merit…and a reliever

Both a Madison radio station and Adam McCalvy of MLB.com have reported that the Brewers are very likely to call up a pitcher from AAA Nashville to join the parent club as a relief pitcher.

Mike Burns has had a terrific season for the Sounds…but as a starter, going 6-0, 2.15 to date.

But instead of adding another starter to the bullpen, they should add someone that has experience as a relief pitcher–Chris Smith (2-0, 1.47…and 10 saves).

Smith has MLB experience, having pitched with the Red Sox last season…more importantly, he already has the mindset and physical regimens to be a reliever–someone who can warm up quickly, throw 10-25 pitches, and be ready to go the next day.

I have nothing against Burns…he is developing into a decent starting pitcher…but he should remain a starter in Nashville in case the Brewers need another starter.
