The conclusion of the 2017 NBA Draft left people wrapping their brains around all of the wild trades/acquisitions that happened over the course of Thursday night. For some, these new players mark a rebuilding process and for others it gives teams flexibility for positions.
For the Boston Celtics, a high profile team everybody was anticipating to pull off some sort of blockbuster trade, kept relatively quiet and kept all four selections they had going into Thursday night. Here are the newest members of the Boston Celtics!
Round 1 (3rd selection via PHI)- Jayson Tatum SF Duke:
Tatum brings an NBA skill set from the legendary Duke program. Reports say that the Celtics plan all along was to snag the freshman wing player. Plan A was successful and the upside for Tatum is that he brings scoring, boards and the silky smooth game he possesses to this Celtics team in need of wings. A comparison that I found was somewhat similar to Tatum was legendary Celtics player Reggie Lewis. The scoring and all around game in which the 19 year old Tatum has, resembles Lewis to me along with similar size.
Round 2 (37th selection)- Semi Ojeleye SF SMU:
Another wing player that looks like an NFL linebacker, Ojeleye was a nice scoop up from the Celtics, given he was an important part of the Mustangs in college. At 6’7 and 240 pounds, the NBA frame is there and alongside fellow teammate Jaylen Brown in Boston, these two guys if they play together in a rotation, can certainly cause havoc for opposing teams.
Round 2 (53rd selection)- Kadeem Allen SG Arizona:
A veteran guard who has stuck around the Wildcats program, Allen is a proven guy that is a defensive minded player who can efficiently help any team as a plug in play guy. Leadership is something Allen possesses along with being vastly underrated as a 6’2 guard. Nice pickup by Boston.
Round 2 (56th selection)- Jabari Bird SG California:
Last year it was Abdel Nader being the last selection for Boston, while this year the C’s take California SG Jabari Bird, teammate of Jaylen Brown for one season. A 6’6 shooting guard that is on the verge of being 23 years old, Bird is a nice snag here and will most likely head down to the Maine Red Claws for development along with Allen.
