- Is Derek Carr The Top QB In The Draft? According to ESPN’s Ashley Fox, former Fresno State quarterback, Derek Carr, could shake up the draft in possibly be the top QB prospect in the 2014 NFL Draft. Fox states the “Big Three” in Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel, Carr—unlike Manziel and Bortles—ran a pro-style vertical offense his sophomore year in 2011. While running Tim DeRuyter’s spread offense, Carr passed 9,186 yards in two years—including 5,082 in his senior year. Could Carr be a top-five pick, or even the top overall pick to the same team his older brother, David played for in Houston? It’s possible, considering Texans new head coach Bill O’Brien’s inclination towards traditional pocket passers familiar with a vertical passing system, such as the one he ran at both Penn State and New England.
