Considering the team’s situation at quarterback, the Tennessee Titans will certainly have their eyes on prospective draft-eligible signal-callers at the annual NFL Combine from February 24th- March 1st.
While the majority of the focus will be on talents such as Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert and Jake Locker; QBs who could be selected by the Titans with their 8th overall pick, Mike Munchak and Co. will also be paying attention to the likes of Colin Kaepernick, Pat Devlin and Christian Ponder; guys who could be ripe for the taking if the team decides to pass on the option of taking a QB in the first round.

The potential 1st rounders
As we roll towards April’s NFL Draft, Cam Newton has emerged as perhaps the draft’s most polarizing quarterback. There are those who are enamored with his combination of size and athleticism and see him as the draft’s most talented quarterback. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Cam’s recent comments have demonstrated an arrogance/ego that have some proclaiming him as a bust waiting to happen.
We’ve discussed the possibility of Newton becoming a Titan before and I wouldn’t be completely shocked if this hypothetical was to become a reality. However, thanks to Cam’s athletic gifts that will continue to be on display over the course of the next few weeks at the Combine and his Pro Day, there’s a pretty good chance Cam won’t be around when the Titans are on the clock.
Mizzou’s Blaine Gabbert is another guy who has gained steamed in recent mock drafts as the guy the Titans will select with their first-rounder. Unlike many of the top QB prospects, Gabbert won’t be putting his throwing arm on display at the Combine. I guess we’ll have to wait until his Pro Day to see what he’s capable of when tossing the pigskin around.
Other guys that have been mentioned as potential first-rounders that I’ll be keeping my eyes on this week are Jake Locker; a very athletic QB whose lack of accuracy could lead to his draft stock plummeting and Ryan Mallet; who is probably going to fall out of the first round due to some character issues.
The best of the rest
If the Titans decide to pass up the opportunity of selecting a signal-caller with their 8th overall pick, there are a few intriguing QB options that should be available in the second round and below.
Colin Kaepernick is a raw but talented QB who opened eyes with his performance during Senior Bowl week. He’s a bit of a developmental prospect but there’s many who believe that down the road, he could emerge as a pretty good QB in this league.
Pat Devlin is an accurate and smart QB who is attempting to follow in the footsteps of fellow Delaware Blue Hen alum Joe Flacco by becoming a starting NFL quarterback one day. Florida State’s Christian Ponder stepped up as the MVP of Senior Bowl and is looking to continue his positive momentum in his attempt to become an option for QB needy teams such as the Titans in the 2nd or 3rd round.
