The topic of marijuana legalization has been gaining traction for the past few years as multiple states have legalized the drug for medicinal use and some even for recreational. One organization where legalization does not seem to be as receptive is the NFL where multiple players have been disciplined for use of the drug. Many players smoke and due to the very loose testing by the league, never get caught. This leads many to believe that the ban is pointless and should just be lifted.
“They need to just let it go. We’re just going to do it anyway. ‘”, said Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie. “They just need to let it go. They need to go ahead and say, ‘Y’all go ahead, smoke it, do what you need to do.” Can’t say he doesn’t make a good point. Plenty of players smoke weed and it won’t stop, no matter how strict the league gets.
Cromartie’s remark was made on the same day NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was asked about the league changing it’s drug-policy to exclude marijuana use. Said Goodell, “This has been something that has been asked several times and I’ll try to be as clear as I possibly can: It is still an illegal substance on a national basis.” I find this laughable as the super bowl featured two teams hailing from states that recently have allowed the use of marijuana recreationally. This means players from both the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks are prohibited from using a substance that is legal to all other residents. Goodell’s reasoning is off base due to the fact that the government has made it known it would not restrict individual states to allow marijuana use.
Roger Goodell may not want to change the drug policy and honestly, it really doesn’t matter whether he does or not. Fact is, players will find ways to smoke as they always have and there is nothing the league can do to stop them.
