NFL Round-up: Millen Still a Draft Failure; Tebow a Bronco QB; Carroll’s Seahawks Revamp Offense; Lions Have Successful Draft

The NFL Draft concluded this weekend, with many veterans still on the move via trades.  If you spent the weekend watching the Wings blow it at home, or the Tigers struggling near the end of their road trip, heres what you missed in the world of the NFL.

  • Matt Millen seemed determined to yet again make an ass of himself during draft weekend.  Luckily, this time it wasn’t at the expense of the Lions draft class.
  • With the 25th overall pick in the first round of this year’s draft, the Denver Broncos selected Tim Tebow.  As soon as the selection was announced, Boomer and Kiper fought for airtime as each began to speculate as to how Tebow would be used in the Broncos offensive scheme.  Will he end up an “h-back” as Kiper seems so adament he will, or will they incorporate him as a gimmick player?  Heres a shocking story Mel might want to skim through.  It appears that the quarterback Denver selected, will actually be used as a quarterback.  Shocking right?  Not exactly.  You can pick apart his throwing technique til you’re blue in the face, but the guy seems pretty determined to me.  He’ll get his chance to run the show at some point in Denver, and until he does, and does so unsuccessfully, I refuse to consider Tebow a bad selection.

  • Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount went undrafted to the surprise of not even himself.  Blount’s most memorable on-field play came when he decked Boise State’s Brand Hout after the first game of his senior season.  Although teams tend to frown on such outlandish behavior (as evident by his undrafted status), the Titans have apparently decided to give him a shot.
  • Another undrafted running back has found himself a home in Tennessee.  USC’s Stafon Johnson suffered one helluva scary injury when he dropped a bench press bar on his throat last fall.  Titans are one for two in the “feel good stories” department.

  • Pete Carroll wasted no time this weekend restructuring the poor Seattle offense he inherited this winter, when he agreed to coach the Seahawks.  Carroll acquired running backs LenDale White from the Titans and Leon Washington from the New York Jets.  White, who played under Carroll at USC, is a beast of a back, but has been forgotten during the emergence of some guy they call Chris Johnson.  Washington suffered a potential career-ending injury last season, when he fractured his right femur.  The Seahawks offense also benefited from the first round of the draft, when beastly offensive lineman Russell Okung fell to them.  Okung was selected sixth overall, and was widely considered the best offensive tackle available in this years draft.  Carroll and company also chose Notre Dame wideout Golden Tate, officially re-shaping the look of their offense in just one weekend.

  • Most analysts seem to agree that Detroit had a successful draft.  The Detroit Free Press has compiled a complete list of each of the Lions draft choices.  Also, if any of you missed the video they played of Jahvid Best when he was selected, take a minute to watch it here.  I question the logic in trading up three spots to take a guy who likely would have still been available in the early second round, but I like this kid’s upside.
