Tonight at 8 p.m., Henrik Lundqvist will participate in the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft.
As assistant captain of Team Alfredsson, Lundqvist will join team captain Daniel Alfredsson in an attempt to draft a superior team over Team Chara captain Zdeno Chara and assistant captain Joffrey Lupul to compete in the All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. and the 2012 All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.
Here are the draft rules…
A coin toss will decide first pick, with Alfredsson and Chara, joined by their assistant captains, alternately drafting the 38 remaining All-Stars through 19 rounds. Each team will consist of three goaltenders, six defensemen and 12 forwards. To ensure that the final draft picks are true selections and not simply predetermined due to position requirements, each team’s three goalies must be picked by the end of Round 10 and each team’s six defensemen must be picked by the conclusion of Round 15.
The 12 Rookies participating in the 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition will be divided by the National Hockey League into two groups of six. At the completion of the 15th round of the 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft, one NHL Rookie will be selected to choose which All-Star team his group will join for the skills competition.
…i thought the draft was a real success last year, as I don’t think anyone will forget Kessel sitting in the player pool area by himself as the last pick. I felt there was some legit drama as the players were being chosen.
…Lundqvist has joked recently that he’s waiting for some gifts from Gabby & Girardi to influence him into picking them early, but I’m curious to see if Hank is able to convince Alfredsson to draft his Rangers teammates especially Gaborik who you have to figure will be an early target for countryman Chara.
The Draft will be televised on TSN and RDS in Canada and NBC Sports Network (Versus) in the United States.
Christopher Botta at the New York Times has more on the embarrassment of being selected last.
