Do the Dallas Stars have the best line in hockey? It is certainly feasible as the team’s combination of Jason Spezza, Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn have been torching the NHL.
At the onset of the season, Dallas opened with Seguin as the top-line center and Jamie Benn at left wing. Both Benn and Seguin were producing admirably on the first line, scoring 13 points in four games played.
However, when first-line winger Valeri Nichushkin was sent to the IR, the team was left without a stable presence on its top line. Head coach Lindy Ruff made a bold decision that would change his team’s fortunes.
During the October 19th game against Philadelphia, Ruff moved Tyler Seguin to the wing and opted to put the newly acquired Jason Spezza on the first line. He responded with three assists and one goal in the game.
Since the move, the trio have accumulated 23 combined points playing together. All three of them are among the top 10 point scorers in the NHL at the moment.
While the three are reaping the benefits of playing with one another, they are also making those around them better, and that holds especially true for the team’s rejuvenated defensive core.
Both Alex Goligoski and Trevor Daley are enjoying good years. Daley, 31, has been able to record six points, three of which have been power play goals. Goligoski tallied three assists in his last two games, and has six overall.
With the offense stepping up at every position, the Dallas Stars are primed for a playoff run. When asked about the team’s offensive potential, Spezza summed it up.
“I think we’re a team that can give other teams headaches nightly if we can take care of the puck in our end,” he said. “Once we get on the attack, there aren’t many teams that might be better than us that way.”
It’s worth noting that quote was taken in early September, before the line of Spezza, Benn, and Seguin came into fruition.
So, just imagine how Spezza must feel now.
