The date of Friday June 26th, will be the day that will go down as a great milestone in Flyers history. This was the night all hockey fans are excited for in the offseason. The night of the NHL draft. Twitter was buzzing for the last few weeks about who the Flyers would get at pick number 7 of the NHL draft. There was one player Flyers fans wanted in particular. A future star in the making, from the WHL, named Ivan Provorov. Provorov is a 6’0’’ big bodied defenseman from Russia. He is 18 years of age and notched 61 points with the Brandon Wheat Kings this year.

In previous press conferences Ron Hextall stated that defense was not a top priority in this years draft. Especially since they are stockpiled with defensive prospects. Including names like Travis Sanheim, Sam Morin and Robert Hagg. Everyone thought since they did not need defense in this draft, they would draft a winger with the 7th overall pick. Then when the flyers were on the clock, the best available player was Provorov. After conferring with Head coach Dave Hakstol, Ron Hextall ultimately decided that Provorov was the best fit for the organization. Flyers nation exploded with excitement after the Flyers announced their pick. Provorov may even have a shot to crack the Flyers roster next season, nothing is ruled out in the mind of Ron Hextall.

This is just a small step in the right direction for the Flyers organization. There are still some trades to be expected in this offseason, and possibly even some free agency signings. Stay tuned for more, my friends.
