The nightmare is finally over. Possibly the best way to wake up on a Sunday morning is to wake up and check your phone, to see that 6 months of torture is finally over. Last night, after a long meeting of 12 hours, the NHL and NHLPA agreed to terms for a new collective bargaining agreement. Major terms of the CBA are (reportedly) as follows:
- 10 years, with an opt-out after 8 years
- Salary cap for the
2012/2013 season-$70 million; Salary floor- $44 million In 2013/2014, the Cap will be $64.3 million
- Term limits for player contracts- 7 years for a free agent, 8 years if you are re-signing your own player
- Each team is allowed two compliance buyouts before the 2013/14 season
- Every team that does not make the playoffs gets a lottery pick in the draft, not just the five worst
Personally, (and I’m sure I am not alone) I am glad to see a ten-year agreement, rather than the five to seven year pacts that were rumored. It ensures that the labor problem will be prolonged for longer, and it doesn’t take a genius to see that the NHL handles labor problems poorly. The season will either start on January 15th(50 game season) or January 19th (48 game season), according to Pierre Lebrun on Twitter. The Flyers have been rumored to be on the schedule on the first day that games start, playing (who else?) the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Philadelphia Flyersseason preview will be coming within the next day or so.
