Trevor Williams, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates
On the surface, Trevor Williams was part of the Pirates’ fast start in April. He owned a 2.29 ERA and held opponents to a .261 wOBA through 35.1 innings. There were reasons for concern in his peripherals, though, evidenced by a 16.4% strikeout rate, 12.1% walk rate, and 80.3% strand rate.
His walk rate in May actually improved greatly to just 3.6%, but his BABIP allowed went from .222 to .304, while his strand rate decreased to 66.5%. Once the month was through and the dust settled, Williams posted a 5.51 ERA in 35.1 innings. The righty’s first June start didn’t go so hot, either, which is why his current ERA (4.38) and SIERA (4.83) are both higher than marks he produced last year (4.07 and 4.63, respectively).
