Earlier this week the Penn State Board of Trustees released a formal statement detailing the reasoning behind firing former Penn Sate president Graham Spanier and head football coach Joe Paterno. The release was not met well by the Penn State family, including the Paterno family. Soon after the statement was released by the board of trustees, citing the decision to fire Paterno coming from a failure of leadership on the coach’s part, the Paterno family deflected the blame back to the board through their own statements.
Clearly, the tension between the two sides is tight, and there are now winners in the fallout. Keep in mind, of course, the Paterno family is not pulling their support from the university as a whole. We know the Paterno family has extended their support to the students and academics even after the sequence of events since November, but that does not necessarily mean they have to like each other.
