NLD Football Podcast – The Temple Owls Preview

Steve Addazio and Temple look to earn their first win against Penn State in over 70 years.

I do not mind saying that Temple head coach Steve Addazio is one of my new favorite coaches in college football. After the Owls lost Al Golden to the Miami Hurricanes I had my doubts about whether or not Addazio would be able to keep things going at Temple. Sure enough, the energy and passion he brought to the Owls helped sustain the path Golden mapped out for the program in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Temple won their first bowl game in a generation last season but Addazio and the Owls are still in search of their first, real signature win. The fact remains that Temple never beat the top teams in the MAC despite lofty conference expectations for the program, and we all know their success against Penn State has become a part of history. The Owls will look for their first win against Penn State since the middle of World War II, but with Penn State’s offense still needing to prove they can have consecutive solid performances this weekend could be anouther tight game in the series and Temple could sneak out with a victory if some things go their way.

Penn State still seems to have an advantage on defense but Temple has an edge in special teams. If this game is once again close going in to the fourth quarter, as it has been the last two seasons, which kicker would you have more faith in right now, Penn State’s Sam Ficken or Temple’s Brandon McManus?

Joining the podcast today to give us all a look at the Temple Owls is Josh Verlin, one of the football writers for Owl Scoop (Rivals affiliate covering Temple) and City of Basketball Love, a website covering college basketball and recruitng for those looking for a hard court fix this upcoming season.

Some of the topics covered in this week’s episode:

  • What role does former Penn State quarterback Kevin Newsome have at Temple?
  • Can Temple find a way to get a passing game going against a weak Penn State secondary?
  • Will Temple’s running game find a way to break through Penn State’s front seven?
  • Which players on Temple’s roster will fans be more familiar with after this week’s game?
