Imagine your parents saying, “You got some expensive presents for Christmas last year, so don’t expect much under the tree this year.” That is exactly what Ben Cherington has been saying to Red Sox fans lately:
Last offseason there were a couple of opportunities for us to make big deals that we thought were in the best interests of the team, and we did that with Gonzo (Adrian Gonzalez) and (Carl) Crawford. You’re not going to do deals of that scope every offseason, it just doesn’t work that way.”
The Red Sox have some big holes; they need an outfielder, at least two starters and bullpen help. They will try to fix these things on the cheap and try to find some low budget free agents. Sometimes that works like it did in the case of Aceves but often it does not like in the case of Brad Penny.
So, while Angel fans are glowing like a kid who is getting a shiny new bike for Christmas, Sox fans can continue in the misery they have been suffering since the end of August.
