It’s coincidential that a site that follows the Washington Redskins opens a story with an old Indian proverb. However it’s the most apt saying to apply to Donovan McNabb.
No. 5 practiced with the Arizona Cardinals players and more recently with his former Philadelphia Eagles teammates, but skipped all of the unofficial Redskins activities organized by his supposed replacement, John Beck. What’s a fan to do?
If McNabb working out with Eagles rather than Redskins feels like disloyalty, then I have questions for you. What if you were Donovan McNabb? How would you feel and, more to the point, what would you have done?
Would the coaching staff have preferred McNabb to have access to the 2011 playbook, or not?
All the whispers by the professional writers covering the team is that the Shanahans no longer want McNabb for the team. If true, they are relieved that McNabb, the third-string QB, skipped the feel good team-building with the guys.
Only one word would apply if McNabb showed up: Awkward.
McNabb did not violate his contract. Like everyone else, he is locked out of the team facility.
Nor has he been any less loyal to the the organization than the organization has been to him. Until very recently, no team spokesman has had anything to say about McNabb.
Here’s the deal for fans who feel hurt. Snce the 1993 start of the modern free agency period, players see themselves as NFL employees as much as team employees. Maybe more. Just ask any player if they know all the words to the team fight song. Heck, a former coach thought Washington’s team colors were the old “maroon and black.”
Fans feel ancient rivalries with hated cities. Players see other players like you see co-workers in the next department. Redskins and Eagles will join in a prayer circle after the game. Rivalries are not what the used to be.
McNabb’s Philadelphia excursion was no big deal. He was just working out with fellow employees. No need for delicate faceoffs with assumed replacements with light resumes until he is paid to do so.
His video on the Real Robinson Report is also no big deal. McNabb essentially said that 2010 was behind him and that anyone who thinks he can’t cut it in 2011 will be proven wrong. You expected him to say he is dwelling on his hurts and the Shanahans are right about him?
I hear motivation from McNabb. You’ll get better controversy by Googling “LeBron James.”
With the dearth of real football news, everybody makes too much of every little thing. Lets not.
I am waiting for the grand plan to unfold. Because the Redskins have been unstable at quarterback since they pushed Jason Campbell out the door.
