No, Sapp didn’t set the world on fire as a rookie; Why?

Seldom do rookies cause a ruckus, but it does happen. Every year you see a few players who just seem to be made for the pro game. Warren Sapp was an all world player, as was Derrick Brooks, but Sapp struggled with the starting lineup a bit in his rookie year. Considering we are talking about Gerald McCoy as being the next Sapp, what gives? Well, the truth is, Warren Sapp was every bit the player he was as a rookie as he was as a 3rd year vet. The problem was, Sapp was taken for his raw playmaking ability. McCoy was taken to fit into the system the way Sapp played. But Sapp didn’t have that system in place when he was drafted. Tony Dungy Wasn’t here, nor was  Monte Kiffin. Instead, Rusty Tillman was the defensive coordinator, and sometimes Sapp would line up where Culpepper/Booger McFarland was. The three technique wasnt set up for him yet, a system that was just perfect for Sapp’s ability to shoot the gap as fast as he does. So don’t be too surprised if McCoy plays better than Sapp did in his rookie season. This time, the house is ready for the Pass rushing phenom!
