For the first time in 2014, Florida State dropped an ACC series. After losing to Florida on Tuesday, FSU dropped the first two of a three-game set against Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Seminoles rallied to avoid the sweep on Sunday and improved to 27-8 on the season. With a 14-4 conference record, Florida State remains atop the Atlantic division. Florida State holds a two-game lead in the division over Wake Forest — a team FSU will visit for three games next weekend. Here’s a quick look back on the weekend series in Atlanta:

A five-run first inning for Georgia Tech was too much for Florida State to overcome as the Seminoles’ rally fell short. Starting pitcher Luke Weaver overcame the sluggish first inning to shut out the Yellow Jackets over the next six, but would take the loss. Despite not having a hit, shortstop Justin Gonzalez drove in two of the three FSU runs.

Georgia Tech scored 11 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the Yellow Jackets handed Florida State starter Mike Compton his first loss of the season. The big blow from the Yellow Jackets was a three-run home run off the bat of Mitch Earnest in the fifth inning. FSU scored all four of its runs in the seventh inning as Justin Gonzalez’s two-run triple was followed by a two-run home run off the bat of D.J. Stewart.

As was the case in the first two games, the Seminoles fell behind big early. Georgia Tech raced to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but this time, Florida State found a way to bounce back. The FSU bullpen did not allow a run in 8 2/3 innings while the offense chipped away with two runs in the fifth. Florida State added three runs in the eighth and it was a two-run single from Josh Delph that put the ‘Noles ahead for good. Delph drove in three runs on the day while Dylan Silva picked up his second victory of the season, pitching 1 1/3 perfect innings. Jameis Winston pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
