Not So Novel: Indoor Exercise

ZumbaSometimes dark, rainy Portland can seem like it offers little to nothing to the outdoorsy type. Even in the summer, inclement weather often puts the kibosh on plans that in other, more temperate climes might flourish. Instead of letting the rain get you down, however, take a deep breath and decide to get your sweat on anyway. Just do it … inside.

I know, I know: it’s not that crazy. Surprisingly, however, few people who aren’t regular members of gyms or yoga studios opt for indoor replacements when their daily jog gets rained out. Personally, I know my general response to a deluge is a shrug, some half-hearted sit-ups, and a grilled cheese sandwich. But this is the wrong approach.

Instead, head to the nearest Zumba space and dance your stress away to a constantly rotating playlist of “Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Reggaeton, Latin Pop, Samba, Calypso, Mambo, Cha Cha, Bollywood, Middle Eastern and more.” And it’s not only for girls … guys go too. What better way to get a workout than with some sexy co-ed moves?

Dancing not your thing? No worries … try something a little more hardcore. If climbing, grunting and straining up a vertical face attached by nothing more than a thin rope sounds more appealing, then give it a whirl at Portland Rock Gym. Prices are decent and you sure can’t beat the 12,500 square feet of climbing space, the biggest in Oregon.

Granted, most folks would rather die than commit to a workout that lasts an hour and a half, but Bikram Yoga is still taking the fitness world by storm. So if you’ve tried it and hated it, then stick to dancing or hauling yourself upward hand over hand, but if you haven’t, go! You might just like it. Best of all, it’s out of the rain.

A lot of people avoid checking out suggestions like these because they’re afraid they’ll have to pay lots of money, but that isn’t necessarily true. Visit websites to see when deals and packages are at their sweetest, and buy then. Plenty of yoga studios have a free first class or a newcomer offer, and Groupon is always a good way to find new ways to sweat for cheap. Whatever your fancy, don’t let the next rainy day keep you indoors!
