The St. Louis Blues defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in a shootout, earning two important points in a tough contest in the United Center. Jay Bouwmeester made his St. Louis debut and the Blues were able to overcome a late blown lead in a game that saw the club stand tall against one of the best teams in the NHL.
Jay Bouwmeester made his St. Louis debut and it was a strong one. He notched an assist, took two shots, earned two penalty minutes and was a (-1) all while spending 25:06 minutes on the ice.
David Backes scored a goal. It's sad that this is a sentence we haven't been able to use very often in 2013, but it's nice to see Backes finally break through. The goal was his fourth of the year. He last scored on March 1st against Edmonton.
Someone released the Cracknell. Scoring two goals on two shots, Cracknell was the first star of the game. Offense from Cracknell is a nice bonus.
The Blues went 4-for-6 in the shootout. Chris Stewart, Andy McDonald, Alexander Steen and Kevin Shattenkirk notched goals. David Perron and Vladimir Tarasenko came up empty.
Brian Elliott stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced.
Hits are a pretty flawed stat and you should never make much of it. However, last night the Blues were the more physical team on paper by a large margin, 43-21.
In an odd sight, Chicago's Ray Emery was chirping at Barret Jackman. There's nothing wrong with players trying to get under the opponent's skin, but Emery sure looks comfortable doing it while sitting safely on the bench, knowing he won't be on the ice.
