The more significant in November WMMA action… This is only my 2nd piece here on Undercard Superstar, so I think a little overview of what this is and how it’s different from other “WMMA reports”
I do not cover everything in WMMA. That would just be, in my opinion, wasting my time and your time. What I do is a best of the best in WMMA. The girls you should be watching, the girls who if the UFC had more weightclasses would be in them, top prospects, beautiful finishes etc. Basically, separating what is relevant from the irrelevant.
This went out a little later than I’d like, but the videos weren’t surfacing on the interweb… Okay, now on to the action.
Circuito Talent de MMA 5
115lbs: Herica Tiburcio def. Chayen Aline Gaspar by submission round 1
Herica Tiburcio is my girl. My kind of fighter. Standing at 4ft 11 and beasting on girls. Just constant work from the get go. Strikes, clinch, judo trip into side, mount, rolls into a triangle, reverses into mounted triangle lets it go, passes side control… And that was like two minutes in. Love it. Hopefully she gets to showcase her game to a bigger audience soon.
115lbs: Camilinha Lima def. Bianca Reis submission round 2
Camilinha” (any Portuguese speakers wanna explain the “inha” I always see added as a nickname is it like the “Kenflo” or “JLau of Brazil?) Camila Lima really needs to change her striking style. She got Struve and Jones like arms, but isn’t even as good as Struve at keeping the distance (that’s very bad). But everything else from her I like. Stays very active on the ground, where she doesn’t need to worry about her opponent landing hard counters. She throws lots of variants of punches, often changing the tempo. Posturing up, hitting the body, doubling and tripling up, hammer fists. There was a wardrobe fix by the ref that drew laughter and big cheers from the crowd (commentary-less fights are awkward) and was welcomed by me. Through round 2 some stoppage happened for Lima’s opponent, I’m not sure what happened, but after a few minutes the fight was restarted, and Lima finished with something you don’t see often. Arm triangle into unconsciousness… FROM MOUNT! That had me jumping off my seat in surprise. Like when Rick Story finished from half guard on Brian Foster. Very nice.
MMA Super Heroes 2
125lbs: #11 Kalindra Faria def. Hellen Bastos by TKO round 2
Well, this fight wasn’t what I expected based on pictures i saw of a blood stained fighters. Faria is a very intriguing fighter, she has the look of a girl that’s seen some bad shit, and fights like she has a personal vengeance. But, her style… it’s just “funky” and awkward. She obviously has some fight instincts, catching the first kick thrown at her, jumping on to Bastos’ back… and getting a little over eager with a “legal” knee (I’m not sure if kneeing a downed opponent is allowed in this promotion, but that rule is garbage. I rather they take out elbows and allow up kicks to fighter on top). Faria hesitated after she threw that knee like she knew, and Bastos did as well. There’s no one else she can fight in Brazil that would help her flyweight ranking.

135lbs: #12 Carina Damm def. Roberta Marreta by TKO in round 1
Do I really gotta say anything? Damm picks up another paycheck and another 1st round TKO (58 seconds) against a nobody. Her first fight in 2013 was in June. This was her 5th fight, since. Crazy.

132lbs (catchweight): #12 Carina Damm def. Daiane Fermino via unanimous decision
Even crazier, Carina Damm fought AGAIN, this month. Not even two weeks after her 1st round TKO, she takes on Fermino, who even without watching the fight (I missed the live stream, and no video), I am very impressed she didn’t get finished. Consider this.
Carina Damm has finished her last 7 wins in the 1st round, 13 of her last 14 wins are finishes, and she entered this fight with a 100% finish rate in her last 10 fights. Interesting that Fermino’s only victory is a TKO of the Roberta Marreta, the girl Damm just fought.
At PXC 41 Gina Iniong picked up a 1st round TKO victory. I believe she was involved in the first female Filipino MMA fight (I don’t mean this one, I mean in the past she was involved in it)

119lbs (Catchweight): Amber Stautzenberger def. #5 (atomweight) Lacey Schuckman by unanimous decision
No video yet, so I can’t say if Schuckman got dominated, but she’s best at atomweight, and took this fight on short notice.
115lbs: #10 Alida Gray def. Katie Klimansky by TKO round 2
Can’t wait to get my hands on this fight. Gray is a serious fighter to watch in the stakced strawweight division. She’s undefeated and finished all her opponents so far.
DEEP JEWELS 2
– Sorry haven’t been able to find any footage yet.
105lbs: #6 Seo Hee Ham def. #12 Sadae Numata via unanimous decision
115lbs: #8 Mizuki Inoue def. #12 Emi Fujino via unanimous decision (advances to finals)
115lbs: Emi Tomimatsu def. Mika Nagano via unanimous decision (advances to finals)
105lbs: #8 Naho Sugiyama def. Masako Yoshida via unanimous decision
135lbs: Shizuka Sugiyama and Ji Yun Kim fight to a draw
Unfortunately, my skepticism was correct for Shizuka Sugiyama. Nicknamed “The Big Newcomer of Hope” (I know, I love Japanese nicknames too) she greatly proved JMMA is in a “dark” ages of sorts. Most of these Japanese fighters just can’t seem to mix in multiple disciplines at once. I thought Sugiyama might be different training in Australia for a year, but in this fight, her choice of technique was the takedown. On the other hand, I’ve been impressed with the Korean MMA scene. They seem to have a better grasp on MMA, and how to make the styles flow with each other.
You can look for this fight, but it really isn’t worth watching, unless you’re like… personally have a connection to her.
Anyone else absolutely LUV Alexis Davis’s little shimmy of the hips to pass completely to side control against Liz Carmouche?
Former Muay Thai Champion (legit Champ, one of the best Muay Thai fighters) Justine Kish def. Tang Jin via unanimous decision to improve to 3-0 in MMA. She really needs to put out some footage… but I gotta admit when should does have a fight that airs, this anticipation will make me wanna watch even more.
Shayna Baszler on Ronda’s armbar: It was the last day of the show, the last training session, the last time [me and Ronda Rousey] were going to grapple. There was only a minute and 45 seconds left in training and that was it. And I said to her, `It looks like I made it the whole season without being armbarred by Ronda Rousey.’ Then, bam, bam, bam, six armbars in a row.
UFC TUF 18 Finale:
Extremely disappointed with the TUF Finale fights all around. I’m not someone that says “The Women always put on a show”, but to be fair, they do a good amount of the time. Tonight was not one of them.
Julianna Pena defeated Jessica Rakoczy in a completely one sided affair. It’s really unbelievable that anyone in the UFC, who fights for a living, cannot get out of mount. I’m gonna make a compilation of people getting TKO’d from mount… maybe a fighter freezes, thinking if he doesn’t cover up it’ll be over (I’m thinking of Kenny Florian raining down shots on one of the best jiu jitsu players, Joe Lauzon, from mount). Rakoczy is up there with Holm and Nakamoto for best striker in MMA, but if she can’t get out of mount, I’m not sure how far she’ll get, especially in the Bantamweight division, when she should be in flyweight at the least.
Jessamyn Duke and Raquel Pennington won against girls that shouldn’t be in the UFC (Modafferri and Morgan). I hope people that watched a women’s fight for the first time isn’t turned off by what they saw…
There was no Griffin/Bonnar moment for the women, something, I felt was really possible for the Rakoczy/Pena fight if she could keep it standing. Sorry, for the negativity… I hate writing negative, it puts me in a bad mood, but these fights already put me in a bad mood. The 209 saved me from cursing this event to hell.
*rankings are at time of fight
