Now the Undrafted Free Agent phone calls begin

It is always interesting watching the draft play itself out (although that is debatable I’m sure). While several names we have studied or come to know from scouting reports and projected draft positions continue to remain on the board, we watch players that even the NFL wasn’t prepared to see come off the board. So much so that they have no vital statistics on them. The other side to that is the old saying ‘there is reason why these players are not getting drafted.’

Needless to say (but I’ll say it anyway), this leaves a great many players undrafted. Many of whom saw their stock drop for one reason or another. Whether it be poor workouts or character concerns or otherwise. But they were highly thought of at some point for some reason. And plenty of undrafted free agents have successful NFL careers. The Raiders finished last season with two of their 2009 undrafted free agents on the roster– DT Desmond Bryant and S Jerome Boyd.

So there is plenty of value out there. The “luxury” these players have is being able to choose which team they go to. They will all undoubtedly receive a great many phone calls from different teams claiming to be desperate for their services. And right now, you can bet the Raiders are feverishly working the phones trying to convince some of them to come to camp with the chance of becoming an NFL player.
