Controversial endings are nothing new to the world of mixed martial arts; however, it seems more pronounced when the controversy surrounds a title fight. At Saturday night’s XKO 10, controversy reared its ugly head when the Douglas Frey – Steven Peterson bantamweight title fight was stopped prematurely as a result of Peterson being unable to continue in the fourth round due to what was ruled by the referee as incidental contact, a knee to Peterson’s chin. The fight went to the scorecards where Peterson was awarded a majority decision and the new XKO bantamweight belt.
However, Frey’s corner protested the stoppage of the fight citing that Frey’s knee was a legal blow and thus, if the fight was stopped due to it then Frey should have been awarded the TKO victory. Video evidence here does seem to indicate that Frey’s knee connected with Peterson’s chest and thus the blow should have been ruled a legal hit. We invite the fight fans to study the tape and decide for yourself, but North Texas Fisticuffs was able to secure a post-fight interview with a very upset Frey.
