Cardinals fans are getting trolled on the daily at this point.
Now the ‘Old Gray Lady’ has joined Deadspin and the Wall Street Journal on the dogpile, claiming that of all the teams left in the MLB Playoffs, the Cardinals deserve to win the World Series the least.
How did they determine this?
But a more logical method, perhaps, would be to rate all the teams based on two factors: fan suffering and individual legacies. That is, has the city or region waited a long time for a championship, or dealt with especially devastating losses along the way? And does the team have players so transcendent that the absence of a championship would be noticeable late in their careers?
So, yeah. This isn’t going to be good.
This is not meant to disrespect the Cardinals. This is the team everyone aspires to be: rich tradition, deep farm system, reasonable payroll, loyal fans, star players. The Cardinals’ front office makes all the right moves. Their players are generally bright and likable.
But they really do seem to win all the time. They’re more like the Yankees than the Yankees these days. The Cardinals have won four pennants in the last 10 years, and World Series championships in 2006 and 2011. Their best players, Yadier Molina and Adam Wainwright, are well decorated. Their fans are hardly suffering, and their best players’ legacies are secure.
Actually, that’s all true. The Cardinals are pretty awesome.
Still, I go back to that word ‘deserve’. From the dictionary:
T0 do something or have or show qualities worthy of (reward or punishment).
If we’re going by the book, I’d argue that the Cardinals deserve to win the World Series more than any other team. After all, these are professional sports organizations. They’re all trying to win.
The sissification of America continues. And the NY Times seems to be leading the charge, wanting to reward teams for being not as good as the Cardinals, well, because we can’t have some big, bad baseball team not letting everyone win.
