Oakland Raiders wide receiver Chaz Schilens has suffered another setback in his attempt to recover from a foot injury that has lingered since the offseason.
Schilens reportedly reinjured the foot that he originally injured in 2008 in a non-contact drill during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers. The injury originally cost him the first 8 games of the 2009 season. He returned after the bye week to catch 29 balls and be the third leading receiver on the team. He had a procedure done on that foot following the season to clean things up, and the recovery from that procedure cost him minicamp and all but the final OTA session.
He initially worked out during training camp, but his foot injury flared up again. He also had leg issues. He has yet to play a down this season in either preseason or regular season.
Schilens was expected to be the Raiders go to receiver this season. However, that did not pan out due to injury. This latest setback makes it likely that the Raiders, who are fighting for the AFC West title, will place him on the injured reserve and end his season. This would give them the roster spot to pursue another receiver, which is something they definitely need.
Perhaps having the remainder of the season to rehab will allow Schilens to be healthy enough to take the field in 2011. However, at this point, it would have to be something that he earns as opposed to being expected.
