С праздником Хэллоуин (or “Happy Halloween”) all, it’s time for another week in the world of CBJ prospects!
We start off in Cleveland, (or Iowa, technically) as the Monsters finished up their first road trip of the season. Starting off in the first period of their first game, Blake Siebenaler gathered the puck at the center red line and passed to Justin Scott. Scott skated in and fired a shot that was stopped but Daniel Zaar was there to pick up the rebound and make it 1-0. The assist on that goal was the first of Blake’s pro career. Later in the first, Markus Hannikainen took a pass from Cody Goloubef and skated around a defender before sliding a backhand past the Wild’s goalie to make it 2-0. Very late in the first, with the Wild on the power play, Zaar stole the puck from a defender at the point and skated in on a two on one. His pass was deflected and Jordan Maletta gathered the puck from behind the net and skated around before firing into an almost empty net for his first career goal.
In the second, just a minute and half after the Wild scored, another rookie would pick up his first career pro goal. Out of some net front chaos, Joe Pendenza passed to Dante Salituro who shot with the puck going to Jamie Sifers. After a save and Sifers shot, the rebound went to Salituro who had another almost empty net to score. Just 37 seconds later after a misplay behind the net, Hannikainen got the puck and fired a shot for his second of the night. That goal would end Alex Stalock’s night but Hannikainen still wasn’t done. Siebenaler broke up a pass and sent the puck into the neutral zone with Hannikainen gathering it, skating in and firing a shot to complete the hat trick – the first since Josh Anderson’s in last season’s playoffs. After two Wild goals in the second, the third was quiet until Dean Kukan fired the puck into an empty net just before the blueline. Late in the third Maletta got into the Monsters first fight of the season when he took on Tyler Graovac. In the 7-3 win Anton Forsberg made 34 saves.
Next up was a three in four with a pair against the old Monsters, the San Antonio Rampage. The Cows rolled out to a two goal lead before the Monsters got on the board. Late in the first, Zaar dropped a pass to Alex Broadhurst who fire da shot that was perfectly tipped by a driving Goloubef to make it 2-1. The Rampage would add a second period goal before The Great Dane would strike. Early in the third period on the power play, off a passing sequence Broadhurst passed to Goloubef. His shot was stopped but the rebound went to Bjorkstrand who buried his first of the season. Ultimately, the Rampage added an empty net goal to make it 4-2. In the loss Anton Forsberg would make 27 saves.
In the rematch it wouldn’t get much better. After a scoreless first, JT Compher scored in the second before Justin Scott scored his first career goal. Goloubef controlled the line, twice dumping the puck into the corner, with Broadhurst gathering the puck and sending it into the slot where Scott gathered it and fire home his first career goal. The Rampage scored three goals in the final six minutes including two empty net goals. In the loss Brad Thiessen would make 24 saves.
Closing out the busy week was a Sunday trip to Chicago for a game against the Wolves. The Wolves scored two first period goals before the local boy got the Monsters on the board. TJ Tynan took a pass from Hannikainen and fired for his first of the season and 100th career AHL point (21-79-100). Early in the second, Bjorkstrand gathered the puck at his blueline starting a two on one with Makrus Hannikainen with Bjorkstrand passing to Hannikainen and him burying it to make it 2-2. The Wolves would add two third period goals to make it 4-2. In the loss Forsberg would make 22 saves.
Kole Sherwood-Flint Firebirds (OHL)
Season Stats 12GP 5-10-15 +8 4PIM
Kole returned to the Birds lineup after missing a game due to injury but he went without a point in games against Peterborough and Kingston. In one of those what I like to call a “defense optional games” Kole did bounce back. In the second, with the Birds trailing 4-3, Kole took a pass from behind the net and fired a shot that was stopped before Ryan Moore gathered the puck and scored to tie it at four. Kole added another assist on Luke Kirwan’s hat trick goal as part of a four goal game. The game ended with a 8-6 final.
Pierre-Luc Dubois-Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL)
Season Stats 7GP 1-3-4 +3 8PIM
Some points to talk about this week for Dubois. Starting off against Moncton – late in the third, PLD and his linemates skated in on a three on two with Pierre skating around a defender and sliding a pass to Jordan Ty Fournier who scored to make it 5-2. In the win, Dubois won 13 of 22 faceoffs.
Up next as part of a back to back with Halifax, in the second with the Birds trailing by one, Pierre got the puck at the blueline and skated into the slot before firing a shot to tie the game at one. The Eagles fell by a score of 3-1. As for PLD at the faceoff dot…let’s not talk about it.
In the rematch, Pierre helped start the scoring when he skated down the wing and slid a pass to Peyton Hoyt who skated in and fired a back hand to make it 1-0 in a 5-2 Eagles win. In the win, Pierre bounced back at the dot winning 14 of 18.
It was announced last week that Pierre-Luc will play for Team QMJHL in the CIBC Canada Russia Series which is a two game series between an all-star team from each CHL league against a team from Russia.
Vitaly Abramov-Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL)
Season Stats 13GP 9-6-15 -10 18PIM
It was a light week for Vitaly and the Olympiques with only two games against Blainville-Boisbriand. After going pointless in the first game which snapped a two game goal streak when Vitaly scored four goals, Abramov was part of both Gatineau goals. Early in the first, Vitaly took a pass, skated into the circle and fired a shot that countryman Yakov Trenin tipped to make it 1-0. Midway through the third with Gatineau trailing 3-1, Marc-Olivier Crevier-Morin fired a shot that was stopped with Vitaly being there at the doorstep to make it 3-2 in a 4-2 Olympique loss.
In other news, a Russian prospects twitter account tweeted the Russian preliminary for the CIBC and Vitlay was listed on it. The roster has 20 forwards listed so I’m not sure if he’ll play in every game or just against Team QMJHL which is how is it used to be (players in the CHL could only play against their own league).
Calvin Thurkauf-Kelowna Rockets (WHL)
Season Stats 12GP 6-4-10 +5 27PIM
It was a successful week for Calvin who put up five points in three games. Starting off against Victoria Calvin scored the game winner. In the second period he snapped a shot from just above the circles to make it 5-2. Calvin added a second goal early in the third to make it 6-2 in a 6-4 Rockets win. Calvin was named third star in the win.
Next up it was off to the Pacific Northwest for a back to back with Portland. Early in the second, Calvin did most of the work on Devante Stephens goal when he got the puck from a board battle and deked around the defense before losing the puck. Fortunately, Stephens was there to fire in the net and make it 2-1. 2:40 after a Portland goal, Calvin again picked up a fluky assist. Calvin passed the puck but it was deflected to Nick Merkley for his first of the season. Kelowna would win the game 5-3.
Up next in the rematch, the Hawks would take a 2-1 lead before Calvin would took pass and sent a cross rink pass to Nick Merkley who hammered a one timer to make it 2-2 in a 3-2 Rockets win.
Sam Ruopp-Prince George Cougars (WHL)
Season Stats 13GP 1-5-6 +2 10PIM
Sam and the Cougars opened the week in Kootenay. Sam picked up an assist on Brogan O Brien’s second period goal in a 5-2 Cougars win.
Sam went without a point in the Cougar’s final two games last week.
Andrew Peeke-Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Hockey East)
8GP 0-1-1 +1 2PIM
Andrew and the Irish welcomed the UConn Huskies to the Compton last weekend and lost on Friday night. Andrew went without a point.
In Saturday night’s rematch, Andrew finally picked up his first career point. In the third, Andrew fired a shot that Dawson Cook gathered before skating around the net. He was stopped but Jack Jenkins gathered the puck in the slot and fired to make it 4-0 in a 6-2 Irish win.
Kevin Stenlund-HV71 (SHL)
Season Stats 10GP 4-1-5 +2 2PIM
Kevin continued his strong play of late. First up, in a game against Leksands, he collected his first career multi point game. In the opening period, Kevin took a pass from a board battle and, while fighting off two defenders, snapped off a shot to make it 1-0. In the second, Kevin got the puck and deked around a defender before skating in pretty much untouched and snapping a shot for his second of the night. Kevin was named third star in the 5-2 HV71 win.
Kevin was held off the scoresheet in the Chainsaws last two games last week.
Gabriel Carlsson-Linkoping HC (SHL)
Season Stats 11GP 1-2-3 +3 4PIM
After missing the Lions last three games due to injury, Gabriel returned to the lineup and went scoreless while playing only 7:29, an at the time season low for him.
Up next against Skelleftea, with Linkoping trailing 4-0, Gabriel received a pass at the blueline and fired a shot that made it through to make it 4-1. Remember what I said about the previous season low? Well, tonight was even less with Gabriel playing only 3:57.
Gabriel was also held without a point in a 5-3 win over Lulea.
Oscar Dansk-Rogle BK (SHL)
Season Stats 11GP 5-4-0-1 2.58GAA .913Sv% 2SO
Oscar has been solid for Rogle the last few games and last week was no different. His week started off against Skelleftea with a 3-2 Rogle win.
Up next against Djurgarden, Oscar again was solid picking up his second shutout in three games when he made 33 saves in a 4-0 win over DIF.
There you have it, folks, another week in the world of Blue Jackets prospects. As for next week the Monsters are off to Manitoba next week for a pair against the Moose and there will be another full week of prospect news.
