Greetings again, all! It’s time for your weekly update on the future Jackets with this being our first update with everyone playing games that matter.
Starting off in Springfield as we usually do, the Falcons opened with a rescheduled game (a rare moved forward game) against Albany. 1:10 into the game the Captain Ryan Craig skated in on the side firing a shot to make it 1-0. Six minutes later Craig would strike again, but on the opposite side, when a Devils player had a shorthanded breakaway but could not control the puck. TJ Tynan was able to corral it and started a two on one with Craig finishing. Sadly, the Devils would score four straight to make it 4-2. Oscar Dansk made 13 saves in the loss.
Up next the Falcons faced the baby Bruins who, with ex-Falcons goalie Jeremy Smith, entered the game with a 153:08 shutout streak. After giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead Jerry D’Amigo scored his first of the season when he potted one from the right circle. Ryan Craig and Kerby Rychel got the assists. Scott Munroe made 16 saves in the 3-1 loss.
To close out the week it was off to Bridgeport for a game with the Sound Tigers. In the 4-3 victory, Dana Tyrell scored two goals in a game that saw Kerby Rychel earning his first multi -oint game as a pro. Corey Cowick and Jerry D’Amigo scored the Falcons other goals. Frederic St Denis and Thomas Larkin were the only other CBJ signed players to pick up points. In the 4-3 win, Dansk made 26 saves.
Blake Siebenaler-Niagara IceDogs (OHL)
Season Stats 15GP 2-4-6 -7 11PIM
Blake was held pointless in a 4-1 loss to Ottawa but did pick up a hat trick of penalties…sigh…all of the illegal check variety. He got one for a check to the head and a double minor for checking from behind (I’m shocked he didn’t get a call given the way OHL safety guy appears to be about safety). In the next game against Sudbury, the Wolves snapped a 13 game losing streak and beat the Dogs but Blake did score his second of the season. In the third with Niagara trailing 5-1, Blake took a pass from Vince Dunn at the point that made its way through traffic to make it 5-2 in a 7-2 loss. On Sunday in a 2-1 loss to Mississauga, Blake picked up an assist on Vince Dunn’s third period power play goal.
Sonny Milano-Plymouth Whalers (OHL)
Season Stats 4GP 1-6-7 -4 0PIM
Sonny and the Whalers had a light week with only two games. In the first matchup, Sonny was held pointless in a 5-2 loss to Erie. In the Whalers annual Pink in the Rink night, Sonny picked up an assist on Bryce Yetman’s third period goal in the Whaler’s 6-2 loss.
Nick Moutrey-Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
Season Stats 14GP 3-11-14 E 19PIM
Nick and the Spirit had a light week as well playing only two games. In the opener against Sault Ste Marie, the Hounds roared (growled…nevermind) out to a 4-1 lead before the Spirit started the comeback. The Spirit came all the way back to win the game 5-4 with Nick picking up an assist on Marcus Crawford’s game winner. On Sunday against Kingston, Nick earned an assist on each of Jimmy Lodge’s two goals in a 5-2 win in which Nick was named third star.
Markus Soberg-Windsor Spitfires (OHL)
Season Stats 14GP 1-4-5 -6 6PIM
Markus would be held pointless in a 4-3 win over Kingston before picking up a point against London. With Windsor trailing 3-1 Markus would do most of the work on Chris Marchese’s second of the night when he’d skate in firing a shot and following it finding Marchese in front firing a shot from a spin to make it 3-2 but the Spits would fall 4-3.
Quickly in bad news – after scoring 12 points in his first eight games, Julien Pelletier has gone cold – going pointless in his last eight. That streak will definitely go at least 11 games for the team as Julien was suspended three games for a slew foot that occurred in the game on Friday against Saint John. Julien is eligible to return on November 12th against Moncton.
Olivier LeBlanc-Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)
Season Stats 15GP 3-9-12 +16 40PIM
It was a weekend matchup between the Sea Dogs and the Screaming Eagles this week. In the opener, Olivier scored the game tying goal with his second power play goal of the season. Olivier would also pick up an assist on Jakub Zboril’s third goal of the season that opened the scoring in a 5-4 shootout win.
Peter Quenneville-Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)
Season Stats 17GP 3-14-17 +1 6PIM
A busy week for Peter and the Kings as they finished up a seven game road trip that covered 5000 kilometers (just over 3100 miles for us in America). In the 3-2 win over Victoria, Peter picked up an assist on Rich Pilon’s game winner in the 3-2 win. Up next against Vancouver, in a 5-2 win, Peter was held pointless. Up next against Lethbridge, with the game tied, Peter drove wide and sent a no look pass to Tim McGauley who scored to make it 4-3 in a 5-4 overtime win. To close out the week against Medicine Hat, Peter picked up an assist on Tim McGauley’s goal 33 seconds into the game – a 4-0 Wheat Kings win.
Oliver Bjorkstrand-Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
Season Stats 14GP 10-7-17 +6 10PIM
The struggling Winterhawks welcomed two of the top teams in the WHL this week. First, against the Kelowna Rockets. Oliver was held pointless in a 5-0 loss on Thursday before scoring his 10th goal on Saturday. In the first period, Oliver picked a Rockets’ pocket and started a two on one but ended up finishing himself by firing a wrist shot for his third shorthanded goal of the season. The Hawks would go on to win 3-2 in overtime. In off-ice antics, on Halloween Oliver and teammate Alex Schoenborn would pick an…interesting pair of costumes – enjoy folks. On Sunday, in a rematch of the last three WHL Finals, the Memorial Cup champ Edmonton Oil Kings came to town with the Hawks winning 3-1 in the win. Oliver picked up an assist on Chase De Leo’s 10th goal of the season, tying Oliver for the team lead.
Tyler Bird-Brown University Bears (ECAC-Ivy League)
Season Stats 1GP 0-1-1 +1 0PIM
Tyler and the Bears finally got started when they travelled to West Point to take on the Army Black Knights (or Cadets whichever you prefer). In the 4-2 Bears win, Tyler played on the team’s third line and picked up an assist on Charlie Corcoran’s second period goal.
Seth Ambroz, Ryan Collins, Mike Reilly-Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big 10)
Ambroz 6GP 1-1-2 +1 2PIM
Collins 4GP 0-2-2 +1 0PIM
Reilly 6GP 0-8-8 +7 6PIM
The Gopher boys took on the St Cloud State Huskies in a home and home this past weekend. On Friday night, all three played in a 4-1 loss with Mike as the only one to pick up a point. With the Gophers trailing 4-0, Mike started a two on one rush with Hudson Fasching with Fasching completing it. In the rematch on Saturday, all three played again marking the first time Ryan Collins has played in back to back games all season. 12 seconds into the second period with the Gophers on the power play, Mike found Kyle Rau who streaked in and crashed the net. Justin Kloos picked up the rebound for his first of the night. In the third, the Jackets other prospects got on the statsheet. Seth was down low and won a battle getting the puck to Ryan Collins who gathered the puck and found Connor Reilly who fired a shot from the slot to make it 3-2. The Gophers would win the game 4-3 in overtime.
Joonas Korpisalo-Ilves (Liiga-Finland)
Season Stats 7GP 4-2 1.84GAA .934Sv%
Joonas went 2-0 last week. He played in his third straight game opening the week against Pelicans. In the 3-2 Lynxes win, Joonas stopped 20 of 22 in the game then stopped both shooters in a shootout. To close out the week against HIFK Joonas stopped 28 of 30 in a 5-2 victory.
Elvis Merzlikins-HC Lugano (National League A-Switzerland)
Season Stats 9GP 7-1-1 2.72 GAA .905Sv% 0-3-3 4PIM
Elvis and the Panthers only had one game before a break in International hockey began (no games until the 11th). In the game against Ambri-Piotta, Elvis stopped 24 of 25 in his seventh win of the season. On Saturday Elvis tweeted a pic of him at the airport heading off to join Team Latvia for the Euro Ice Hockey Challenge in Stavanger, Norway. In the tournament Latvia will play Norway, Denmark and France.
That’s it on baby Jacket updates. As for next week, it’ll be a North American week as the European teams are taking time off. See you then!
