Oct 29-Nov 4 CBJ Prospect Week In Review

Somewhat of a slow week for some reason but without further adieu here we go with the week in review.

Starting off with Springfield, who are tied for first place in the whole AHL (if you wanna read that again go ahead, I’ll wait). The Falcons went 1-0-0-1 last week, with the win being a BIG one. Starting on Friday, the Birds welcomed the Hershey Bears to town and took a 3-2 shootout loss. Michael Chaput and his rookie “green line” mates Dalton Smith and Sean Collins would combine for Chaput’s first pro goal when he would knock home a rebound, and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault would score his third of the season. Matt Calvert would be the only Falcon to score in the shootout, while Curtis McElhinney would make 27 saves, stopping five of seven in the shootout.

After a rare Saturday off, Springfield would face off against rivals the Connecticut (Fail) Whale. The Falcons would demolish the Whale 10-2 with two ex-Whale combining for seven points with two goals and five assists. Tim Erixon would open the scoring with his first of the season when he’d jam a shot past Whale starter Cam Talbot. JAM would make it 2-0 with a beauty of a breakaway also taking out Tomas Kubalik in the aftermath, Nick Drazenovic would make it 3-0 with his third of the season off a one-timer set up by Erixon. Ryan Johansen would score the first of his two goals, making him the first Falcon with a multi-goal game, deflecting home a Nick Holden point shot. Kubalik would score on a breakaway straight out of the penalty box to make it 5-0. Johansen’s second goal would come off a JAM pass out of a spin move to avoid a check. Andrew Joudrey‘s second goal of the season would come off the rebound of a Holden point shot that Whale backup/ex-Blue Jacket Traverse City invite Jason Missiaen couldn’t corral. Cam Atkinson would score the Birds’ eigthth goal, while Chaput would make it 9-2 when he fired a shot from the blueline over Missiaen (which is a challenge seeing as he’s 6’8″) for his second goal in as many games.  Drazenovic would close the scoring to make it 10-2, the most goals the Whale had ever allowed (not sure if that’s just since they became the Whale or in the Franchise’s history). The 10-2 win was the first time a AHL team had hit double-digit goals since the Oklahoma City Barons scored 10 against Texas last October and tied the franchise record for most goals scored. Tim Erixon became the first AHL player to be a +6 since ex Jacket Mathieu Roy did it for Norfolk in December 2010. Curtis McElhinney again would make 27 saves in the 10-2 win to give him six on the season. On the weekend Jonathan Audy-Marchesault and Tim Erixon would lead the Falcons with four points, with JAM having two goals and two assists while Erixon had a goal and three assists just against the Whale. Ryan Johansen and Nick Holden would have three points with “The Johan” scoring two goals and a assist and Holden having three assists against the Whale. Other Falcons with two points include Michael Chaput with his first two pro goals, Nick Drazenovic with two goals and Sean Collins, Dalton Prout and Matt Calvert having two assists. Here are the weekend highlights so you get to see most of the goals from the games.

Down in Evansville, the IceMen went 2-0 last week with all three defensive prospects playing in both games and Austin Madaisky still being the only one to score with him picking up three assists including his first pro multi-point game with two assists against Wheeling on Friday night.

As always we’ll go through the prospects that didn’t score. Josh Anderson would be held off the scoresheet last week but got in the first prospect fight of the season when he’d take on Austen Brassard in what I’ll call a draw (little hard to fight when the opponents jersey is over his face hmmm Austen?), only nine fights left Josh. In a interesting note despite not having any points Josh would be named third star in the Knights 3-0 win over Guelph. In the Whaler’s split last week Gianluca Curcuruto would be held scoreless and was a -2, but the Whaler’s website would post this article about “The Chin”. TJ Tynan again would go scoreless last week in the Irish’s split with Western Michigan. Anton Forsberg didn’t dress for any of Sodertalje SK’s games last week with an injury. I don’t have any concrete info on it, but in one translated tweet I saw it was a knee injury. The European prospects except for Joonas Korpisalo are now off until November 13th because of National team play.

Oscar Dansk-Erie Otters (OHL)
Season Stats 15GP 4-9-0-2 .894SV% 4.04GAA
Another tough weekend for Oscar and the Otters, as they went 0-3 last week with Erie giving up an average of five goals per game and letting the opposing team average 44 shots on goal in the three losses. On Friday, Oscar would make 31 saves in a 6-3 loss to Owen Sound. He would not fare much better the next night, allowing six goals while making 36 saves in a 6-1 loss to the Attack. On Sunday, Oscar would give things over to back up Devin Williams with him making 48 saves in a 4-1 loss to Mississauga. Next week Oscar will face off against one of his potential teammates when Boone Jenner and the Generals (along with a bunch of my friends and I) invade Erie on Saturday night.

Boone Jenner-Oshawa Generals (OHL)
Season Stats 19GP 15-15-30 +11 18PIM
Another standard three in three for the Generals with Boone scoring seven points in three games. He might have been the OHL player of the week had Niagara’s Brett Richie decided to not score 10 goals in three games (I’m not kidding). Starting off on Thursday, Boone would put on a show being part of four off the Generals five goals with two goals and two assists and being named first star. Boone would open the scoring when he a bouncing puck came out to him and he let loose a shot from the slot for his 12th of the season. Boone’s first assist would come on Scott Sabourin’s shorthanded breakaway, Boone’s second goal would come off a snapshot from the circle. Boone’s second assist was more of a keep in/short dump in getting it to Tyler Biggs who’d get it out to Matt Petgrave for a blast from the point. On Friday in front of a national TV audience (plus me and a few other people paying attenion at R-Bar during the CBJ simulation game), the Generals would travel to Guelph to take on the Storm. Boone would open the scoring with his 14th goal in the second period on a snapshot just outside the circle and was named third star. Boone and the Generals would close out the weekend on Sunday, taking on the Kingston Fronternacs with Boone scoring his 15th goal and adding his 15th assist in a 5-2 win. Next week Boone will be playing in the Subway Super Series game on Thursday in Guelph when they take on Team Russia, and as I said before my friends and I, along with the BlueJackets.com team will be heading to Erie on Saturday.

Lukas Sedlak-Chicoutimi Sagueneens (QMJHL)
Season Stats 20GP 7-8-15 +3 29PIM
Lukas and the Sags would open the week with a home and home against the Baie Comeau Drakkar. On Friday, Lukas would score Chcicoutimi’s only goal in a 7-1 loss, winning 13 of 24 faceoffs. Lukas would be pointless in a 6-2 loss on Saturday, winning 16 of 28 faceoffs. Lukas also got in a fight this weekend when he took on Gabriel Verplaest. Lukas would close the weekend scoring the game winner in a 6-2 Sags win, winning 28 of 35 faceoffs and being named second star.

Ryan Murray-Everett Silvertips (WHL)
Season Stats 19GP 2-15-17 E 14PIM
Light week for the Tips, only playing two games going 0-2 with losses to division rivals Tri-City and Spokane. Ryan would have an assist on both Tips goals in a 3-2 loss. Ryan’s first assist would be when he cycled the puck, getting it to Landon Oslanski whose blast was rebounded and tipped in by Stathis Soumelidis. Ryan’s second assist was a rocket, when he pinched in and, after a few bounces, Tyler Sandhu would flip it in. Ryan would be named second star in the loss. Ryan was held scoreless in a 5-0 loss to Spokane.

Thomas Larkin-Colgate (ECAC)
Season Stats 9GP 0-3-3 22PIM
Thomas and the Raiders took on in-state rival Cornell in a home and home, earning a loss and a tie. Starting off with a home game on Friday, the Raiders would lose 3-1 with Thomas picking up his third point in four games on Darcy Murphy’s team leading fifth of the season. In Saturday’s 2-2 tie, the game would get feisty in overtime when Thomas(6’5″) and Cornell’s Dustin Mowrey(5’9″) received coincidental roughing calls and game misconducts, earning Thomas 14 penalty minutes. According to Raiders play by play man John McGraw “it was a big cluster at the end of a hard fought weekend series” John didn’t even know Larkin was in it until he saw the penalty sheet. John really had no idea how the refs picked Thomas out of the various scrums, which I attributed to #tallguyproblems. John was “surprised there weren’t more penalties out of said scrum or from shenanigans in the handshake line”. Next week, Thomas and the Raiders will travel to take on Quinnipiac and Princeton.

Martin Ouelette-Maine (Hockey East)
Season Stats 2GP 0-2-0 .878SV% 3.06GAA
Martin made it into another game for the Black Bears, another Bears loss (their fifth straight), going down 4-2  to Boston College. In the loss to the Eagles, Martin would make 19 saves on 22 shots with Maine allowing an empty netter. It appears that coach Whitehead is going with a rotation until one of his three goalies gets going, and the way it’s going it might be a while as the team lost again on Sunday to rival New Hampshire to make it six straight losses. According to Matt Soucy of the Maine Hockey Journal, the team’s 1-8 record is the team’s worst start since the 1985-86 season.

Kevin Lynch-Michigan (CCHA)
Season Stats 7GP 2-4-6 8PIM
Kevin and the Wolverines took on the Northern Michigan last week with the Wolverines winning in a shootout on Friday and losing on Saturday. In the shootout win Kevin would score his first of the season sparking a comeback. With Michigan trailing 4-1, Kevin would bang home the rebound of a Mac Bennett point shot. Kevin would have a rough night at the faceoff dot winning only two of the 14 he took. In Saturday’s game, Kevin would pick up a goal and a assist in a 4-3 loss, being named third star. As for next week it’s rivalry week as the Wolverines will play Michigan State.

Seth Ambroz, Mike Reilly-Minnesota (WCHA)
Season Stats Ambroz: 7GP 2-3-5 4PIM, Reilly: 7GP 0-4-4 0PIM
The Gophers would take on Minnesota State last week in a home and home. In Friday’s Gopher 3-2 win, Seth and Mike would assist on Travis Boyd’s third of the season. The duo would be held scoreless in a 5-3 loss on Saturday. Next week will be a long one as the Gophers travel to Russia…umm I mean Anchorage, Alaska to take on the Seawolves.

Daniel Zaar-Rogle BK (Sweden)
Season Stats 9GP 2-1-3 E 0PIM
Daniel would be back with the Rogle main club after playing a game with the J20 team last week. Starting off with a overtime win over Brynas IF Daniel would pick up his first SEL assist on Alexander Barta’s goal. Rogle would be held off the scoreboard for the rest of the week losing 4-0 on Thursday to Farjestads and 1-0 to Lulea HF on Saturday. As I said above hockey in Europe is off until November 13th.

Joonas Korpisalo-Jokerit Organization (Finland)
Season Stats with Kiekko-Vantaa 10GP 3-6 .897SV% 3.02GAA
The Fish would have a back to back with JYP Akatemia last week with Joonas playing in Friday’s 4-3 loss making 21 saves. Joonas would be called up to back up Eero Kilpeläinen in Jokerit’s 3-2 shootout loss to Lukko on Saturday. Joonas will be the only European prospect playing during the break as he will be playing for Finland in the 4 Nations Tournament in Sundsvall, Sweden.

There you have it folks another week in Blue Jackets prospects land in the books. As for next week, along with a duo of prospects matchups in the OHL, I’ll have a live view of both Boone Jenner and Oscar Dansk and we’ll have an international hockey update with Boone playing the Russians on November 8th along with Joonas at the 4 Nations.
