The fallout from the altercation at the nightclub PLAY last weekend landed today. Octavius Ellis, a freshman forward, has been dismissed from the team. Let’s hear from Mick Cronin through a statement through the USA Today:
“Octavius didn’t adhere to the standard of conduct I expect from members of our team. I will work to help him find a fresh start at a new program because I do care very much for him as a person. I believe he can benefit from being in a new environment. That’s likely what will help him the best to learn and mature from this.”
Ellis had this to say:
“I regret the mistakes I made this year and I know I need to mature as a person. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for the opportunity I had at UC.”
Not to be outdone, Whit Babcock added:
“I believe Coach Cronin has our program headed in the right direction. I appreciate his leadership of our young men athletically, academically, and socially.”
No formal charges will be added.
This is a rough break for Ellis. Some of you may know that he saw his mother get murdered. The young man was involved in the fight during the Crosstown Shootout. He’s got some problems, clearly, in dealing with anger. I don’t know how you can blame him. I hope that he gets the help that he needs and he finds a university and a support system. That’s the most important thing for his life at this time. Things happen in life. How you deal with them is very important. He’s not dealing with them very well. All the best, Octavius.
