Sorry to be a bit late this week in our prospect review. A new job has modified my schedule a bit – so let’s get on with it!
Last week ended the Falcons season opening four game homestand with the team earning its first ever 3-0 start. On Friday night a game (attended by our own AlisonL) was a battle of the birds as the Falcons hosted the baby Pens from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In the 4-2 Falcons victory it was the “Cam/JAM/Johan show” as the trio combined for seven points with three goals and four assists. Jonathan Audy-Marchessault opened the scoring with his second of the season off a blast from the point on a five on three power play. John Moore would score his first of the season on a blast from the point off a faceoff in his 150th pro game (NHL+AHL). Cam Atkinson would find the scoresheet, scoring from in front the net off the rebound of a JAM Shot. Ryan Johansen would close out the scoring during a two on one with Cam Atkinson, tapping it home to make it 4-2 Falcons. Satuday night, the Falcons would face the Providence Bruins losing 3-1 with Nick Drazenovic burying a rebound off a John Moore shot for his first of the season. Curtis McElhinney would be in net for both games stopping 56 of 61 shots for a .918 save percentage and a 2.54 GAA. Leading the Falcons in scoring would be Jonathan Audy-Marchessault with a goal and two assists with Ryan Johansen, John Moore, Nick Drazenovic and Cam Atkinson each having a goal and a assist and Matt Calvert picking up two assists.
In Evansville, the IceMen are still looking for their first ECHL victory after going 0-1-0-1 last week and both Jackets going pointless. Oliver Gabriel was placed on the 21 day IR and did not play on Saturday night’s shootout loss sending this picture out after the game. Teammate and former Jackets prospect Trent Vogelhuber would add a little levity by saying “getting ur leg sliced by a skate makes Target shopping a heck of a lot more fun at least” with this picture (results may vary).
As for the rest of the Jackets prospects, starting off with the ones that didn’t score last week, Drew Olson was held off the scoresheet but was even in a split with Notre Dame and fellow Jackets prospect TJ Tynan. Daniel Zaar would have his two game goal streak snapped when he was held off the scoresheet, and would miss Rogle’s next game with, according to Jonas Lindeblad, a “hot forehead”. Apparently he had a 40 degree temperature (Celsius!, 104 in Farenheit). It was also another weekend of Martin Ouelette not playing one game, not even dressing for one game which led to me finding out about some drama. Saturday night Martin wouldn’t dress and, because of a tweet by Matt Soucy, I was under the impression Martin left/been kicked off the team, but either I read the tweet or he worded it wrong…I hope. The tweet in question read “(Martin) didn’t agree with Whitehead’s (Maine Coach) choice to start Morris vs Army last Saturday and made it well known.” also telling me “Its not the first time he (Martin) and Whitehead have had disagreements.” Good luck kid cause a player having trouble with a coach always works out.
Oscar Dansk-Erie Otters(OHL)
Season Stats 10GP 3-6-0-1 .900Sv% 3.88GAA
Oscar and the Otters were off on a three in three with two of them being on the road in Canada. Starting off on Thursday against Windsor, Oscar would make 40+ saves for the second time this season. A lot of those shots would come on a seven minute Spitfires power play (yes you read that right, I’d never heard of one) taken by Islanders pick and Otters alternate Captain Adam Pelech. Pelech stood up for teammate Hayden Hodgson when he was demolished (hit is at the start of this video-should have been a charge) by Patrick Sieloff, which even Otters play by play man Paul Roper said was a bogus call. Windsor’s two goals would come on the power play. Oscar would make 45 saves and was named first star in the loss including a highlight reel save (24 seconds in) at the end of the first on Kerby Rychel. The next night it was off to London to take on the Knights in front of an international audience (US and Canada). This game was hard for Jackets fans with both teams having a CBJ prospect. Oscar would also allow a goal on the first shot he faced when Max Domi would score on a backhand 46 seconds in. Josh Anderson would score on his possible future teammate late in the first. The goal came on a backhand after Josh had two whacks at it. Oscar would be perfect the rest of the way as the Otters would claw back to tie it forcing a shootout. Oscar would stop 37 of 39 also stopping all four in a shootout earning him second star honors. The Goalie Guild reported on the game, giving Oscar a grade of ‘A’, saying he “continued to smooth out as the game went along, becoming one of the best players on the ice halfway through the third“. Oscar would get Saturday’s rematch with Windsor off after starting seven straight, with backup Devin Williams taking the loss.
Boone Jenner-Oshawa Generals(OHL)
Season Stats 13GP 9-9-18 +9 14PIM
Boone had a down week scoring only an assist in the Generals only win last week as the team went 1-2. In Oshawa’s two losses in which Boone had no points he was a -5. Jenner’s assist would come in a 2-1 win over Owen Sound. It was originally reported on twitter that Boone had scored his 10th goal of the season but if you watch the video closely, you see that Geoffrey Schemitsch got a piece of it for his second of the season. It was also announced today that Boone will play in the Subway Super Series for the second year in a row (see below for link). Boone will be playing in the game against Russia on November 8th in Guelph.
Josh Anderson-London Knights(OHL)
Season Stats 11GP 3-4-7 +3 6PIM
Josh had goals in back-to-back games this week including scoring on fellow Jackets prospect Oscar Dansk. Josh’s goal would be the second backhand goal (22 seconds in) Oscar would allow after his D allowed Josh three tries at it. According to the Knight’s twitter feed, Josh was all over the ice and was a #workhorse. The next night, the Knights were off to Barrie with Josh adding another goal, this time on the power play, as he would take a perfect pass that looked like a shot from Alex Broadhurst to make it 2-0. The Knights would win it 3-2 in a shootout over the Colts. Josh had his scoring streak snappped in a win over Sudbury.
Gianluca Curcuruto-Plymouth Whalers(OHL)
Season Stats 11GP 1-5-6 +3 8PIM
Gianluca would help the Whalers go 3-0 last week picking up an assist in the team’s win over Kingston. Curcuruto would go pointless in a win over Peterborough, but would pick up his fifth assist of the season when Simon Karlsson would tap in a rebound off Curcuruto’s blast from the point on the power play to make it 1-0, en route to a 8-3 win. To close out the three in three weekend, the Whalers would travel to Oshawa with Curcuruto going pointless, but +2 in the 4-2 Whalers victory.
Lukas Sedlak-Chicoutimi Sagueneens(QMJHL)
Season Stats 14GP 4-7-11 +3 18PIM
All sorts of bonus hockey for Sagueneens fans last week with the team winning and losing in a shootout and adding another loss. In a 5-4 shootout win over Baie Comeau, Lukas would go scoreless winning 13 of 25 faceoffs. The big game performance came from ex-Jackets prospect, Petr Straka who was named QMJHL first star of the week last week with seven points in three games including a goal and two assists against the Sags. In a 4-3 shootout loss to Saint John, Lukas would have two assists for his first multi-point game since September 22 also winning 19 of 28 faceoffs. To close out the weekend, Lukas would have a assist in a 2-1 loss to Blainville winning 12 of 24 faceoffs. On the weekend, Lukas would have three assists winning 44 of 77 for 57% of his draws.
Ryan Murray-Everett Silvertips(WHL)
Season Stats 13GP 2-9-11 +1 10PIM
Whatever Ryan Murray did last week I hope he keeps doing it. The Tips finished up their six game road trip across Canada and Ryan would add a goal and six assists. Starting off in Moose Jaw, Ryan would score his second of the season, and first since September 23, off a faceoff early in a Tips power play. In the win, Ryan would be named third star. The next night it was off to Swift Current. Ryan would have a assist on each of the Silvertips goals in a 3-1 (warning announcer is kinda annoying) win and was named first star. Friday in Prince Albert, Ryan would add another assist on Josh Winquist ‘s goal (1:54 into the video watch that rink length pass by Ryan). To close out the trip it was off to Saskatoon to play the Memorial Cup host Blades for pink in the rink night. Here’s a picture of Ryan taking the ceremonial faceoff. Ryan’s first assist would be a pretty one as he brought the puck up on a four on two to begin a pretty tic tac toe play. Ryan’s second assist would be pass/shot that it appears Josh Winquist would deflect past the Blades goaltender.
Thomas Larkin-Colgate(ECAC)
Season Stats 5GP 0-1-1 8PIM
Thomas and the Red Raiders would welcome the Bowling Green Falcons to Starr Rink earning a split. After going scoreless on Friday, Thomas would pick up his first point of the season picking up a assist(26 second into the video) on Kyle Baun’s shorthanded goal where Thomas was falling from a scrum but pushed the puck ahead to begin a three on one. Next week Thomas and the Raiders welcome RIT and travel to Quinnipiac.
Kevin Lynch-Michigan(CCHA)
Season Stats 3GP 0-2-2 4PIM
Kevin and the Wolverines only had one game this week playing a gimme game against Bentley (I’ll give you a second to look up if that’s a real school). Bentley is a member of the Atlantic Hockey Conference so this match up was like OSU playing a MAC school in football. Ok, I kid. The Falcons did give Michigan a run for their money jumping out to a 2-1 lead, but then it would be all Wolverines as they would go on to win 6-3 with Kevin Lynch picking up two assists for his first points of the season. Kevin’s first assist was off a face-off win with the second one being a little more impressive. For point number 2, Jets first round pick Jacob Trouba sent Kevin on a breakaway and he almost scored but was stopped. Luckily this left Alex Guptill to simply tap it in for his second of the night. Next week the Wolverines welcome the Miami Redhawks to Yost Ice Arena.
Seth Ambroz, Mike Reilly-Minnesota(WCHA)
Season Stats Ambroz 4GP 2-2-4 2PIM Reilly 4GP 0-3-3 0PIM
The Gophers split with Michigan Tech last weekend. Two Jackets prospects went scoreless in Friday night’s 5-3 loss giving the Huskies half as many wins as they had all last season with 2; however, there would be a different result on Saturday night. During the second match up, a Jackets prospect would be part of every Gopher’s goal as Seth Ambroz would score two and Mike Reilly would assist on the other. The 3-2 win would be Gopher’s coach Don Lucia’s 600th career win. The two goal game would be Ambroz’s first since Minnesota’s season opening win over Sacred Heart last season. Late in the first period Seth would pick up a rebound off a Ben Marshall point shot knocking it in off a rebound. Mike Reilly’s assist would be a pretty one where he send it through the entire Huskies lineup catching a streaking Erik Haula for his third of the season. Seth’s second goal could be one of his prettier ones as Seth took a rink wide pass from Nate Condon blasting it past the Michigan Tech goalie. You score two goals for Minnesota and you get to be a media darling as Seth got to do interviews after the 1st period, after the game on TV and with USCHO.com. The Gophers had an interview as well.
TJ Tynan-Notre Dame(CCHA)
Season Stats 4GP 2-2-4 2PIM
TJ and the Irish faced off against Minnesota-Duluth earning a split against the Bulldogs with TJ adding to his season opening point streak with a goal and a assist. In the Irish’s home opener, TJ would pick up a assist on the Irish’s only goal in a 3-1 loss. The next night TJ would open the scoring when, off a turnover, TJ would fire a twisted wrister just over the Bulldog’s goalie’s shoulder. TJ will go into next week’s series against Northern Michigan needing only a point for 100 in his career.
Anton Forsberg-Sodertalje SK (HockeyAllsvenskan)
Season Stats 10GP 5-5 .918Sv% 2.30GAA
Anton would have one of his better weeks last week stopping 36 of the 40 shots he faced in two SSK victories. First, against Almtuna IS, Anton would stop 18 of 19 shots. Next up was a game against IF Troja/Ljungby. Anton would make 18 saves in a 4-3 victory which would be Anton’s/team third in a row.
Joonas Korpisalo-Jokerit Organization (Finland)
Season Stats Has Played with multiple teams
Joonas’s last week was with the main club serving as a backup in the team’s only game. He then earned a start for the J20 team on Saturday for the second time this season. In the Jesters 2-1 shootout win over Pelicans, Joonas would make 23 saves in regulation and OT and go on to be perfect in the shootout – making three saves.
It was also announced this week that Jacket’s top prospects Boone Jenner and Ryan Murray will be playing for one game in the Subway Super Series for their respective leagues. As for next week, I’ll hopefully be back on my regular schedule, real life got in the way this time!
