October 22-28 CBJ Prospect Week in Review

It’s time for this week’s update on the players within the Blue Jackets’ development system. Let’s get right to it by checking in with our AHL and ECHL affiliates.

The Springfield Falcons got back at it this weekend with every player’s favorite thing ever: a three in three. Starting off on Friday it was rematch with the team that gave the Falcons its first loss just last week, the Providence Bruins. The Falcons would bounce back in a big way with Curtis McElhinney picking up his second shutout of the season making 33 saves. Ryan Johansen would have the only multi-point game having two assists. Brad Larsen would defy hockey law by not sticking with the hot hand after a shutout giving Paul Dainton his first start of the season against Bridgeport. In the shootout loss, Dainton would still be named first star making 36 saves in the game then stopping three of seven in the shootout. On Sunday, the Birds would take on the Portland Pirates giving McElhinney a shot at his old team. In the 3-2 victory, the Falcons would roar out to a 3-0 lead before allowing two second period goals. On the weekend, Ryan Johansen and David Savard would lead the Falcons with three points each. The Johan scored a goal and two assists and Savard had three assists. Other Falcons with multiple points were Cam Atkinson with two goals and Nick Drazenovic, Matt Calvert and Andrew Joudrey with a goal and assist, and defensemen John Moore and Cody Goloubef each with two assists.

The IceMen are still looking for ECHL win number one going 0-4 this week. The IceMen got some reinforcements from the Jackets/Falcons as the teams would assign rookie defensemen Will Weber and Austin Madaisky with both playing in the weekend’s three in three. Madaisky would be the first Jackets’ prospect to score a point for the IceMen with a assist in Sunday’s 5-2 loss. Ex-Jacket prospect Trent Vogelhuber would pick up assists in back to back games on Saturday and Sunday. The IceMen will be semi close next week as they play in Toledo next week on Saturday.

Moving to the prospects that didn’t score, it was mostly our NCAA prospects. Drew Olson would go scoreless in the Bulldogs loss and tie(yes they still happen) with Wisconsin. Now from the “shocking” file, TJ Tynan would go scoreless in the Irish’s sweep of  Northern Michigan meaning he still is looking for point number 100. Seth Ambroz and Mike Reilly had a bit of a odd weekend playing an exhibition against the US Under 18 team on Friday earning a 2-2 tie and then playing on Sunday in a non-conference game against Canisius with the Gophers winning 1-0. Neither Ambroz nor Reilly got a point. Gianluca Curcuruto would go scoreless as the Whalers went 2-1 last week to go 5-1 to close out Plymouth’s October schedule.

Oscar Dansk-Erie Otters(OHL)
Season Stats 13GP 4-7-0-2 3.73GAA .901Sv%

Oscar and the Otters went 1-2 last week with Oscar starting all three games. The boys got off to a strong start with a 7-1 win over Saginaw where Oscar had a shutout until very late in the third making 34 saves and being named third star. In the team’s next game against Peterborough, Oscar would face 40 shots or more for the fourth time this season stopping 35 in regulation, then stopping two of four in a shootout giving the Petes a 6-5 shootout victory. Next, it was the Sarnia Sting coming to town with Oscar stopping 29 of 33 shots. Oscar was pulled towards the end of the game and the Otters gave up a empty netter for a 5-2 Sting victory.

Josh Anderson-London Knights(OHL)
Season Stats 14GP 4-7-11 +4 10PIM

Another strong weekend for Josh and the Knights going 1-1-0-1 with Josh adding a goal and three assists. Starting off on Thursday against Peterborough, Josh would pick up two assists on Chris Tierney’s first two goals of the season. The first assist would come off a cycle, allowing Tierney a wrap around. The second appeared to be kinda fluky as his deflection would direct right to Tierney for his second of the night. The next night against Plymouth and fellow CBJ prospect Gianluca Curcuruto, the Knights comeback would fall just short with Josh picking up an assist on Max Domi’s late game goal to make it 3-2. Josh’s shot would rebound out so that Domi could tap it in. To close out the weekend, Josh would score his fourth goal of the season as he streaked in and caught the puck from Seth Griffith,  launching it over the Storm’s goalie’s shoulder.

Boone Jenner-Oshawa Generals(OHL)
Season Stats 16GP 11-12-23 +9 18PIM

Boone and the Generals would go 1-1-0-1 last week with Boone picking up five points to claw his way back into the OHL scoring race giving him 23 points, second only to Sault Ste Marie’s Nick Cousins 24. Starting off on Tuesday, Oshawa would need a shootout to beat the 67’s with Boone scoring his 10th of the season with a laser to open the scoring. Boone would later add a goal in the shootout to tie it up, with Scott Sabourin winning it for the Generals on the next shot. In Oshawa’s next game against Saginaw, Boone would pick up two assists with both being the primary assist in a 3-2 loss. To close out the weekend, the Generals would welcome the Peterborough Petes, with Boone being in on both Generals’ goals. Boone scored his 11th goal of the season which the commentator pretty much predicted by saying Boone had been amazing in the period but the Generals hadn’t scored. Right about then, Boone would lead a two on one rush letting loose a rocket just above the circles. Boone would also add an assist on Matt Petgrave’s game tying goal. Boone would miss in the shootout in the 3-2 Petes shootout win.

Lukas Sedlak-Chicoutimi Sagueneens(QMJHL)
Season Stats 17GP 5-8-13 +4 22PIM

Lukas and the Sags would have a rough week going 0-2-1-0 last week with Lukas scoring a goal and a assist but having a couple of rough nights at the faceoff. Starting off against PEI, Lukas would pick up a assist in a 6-3 loss winning only eight of 21 faceoffs he took. On Saturday, the Sags would run into the buzzsaw that is the Halifax Mooseheads – a team that includes two possible top 10 picks including projected top pick Nathan MacKinnon and teammate Jonathan Drouin who has 23 points in 10 games (yes you read that right). In the loss to the Herd, Lukas would score his fifth of the season in a 6-2 loss with Lukas winning nine of 21 faceoffs. To close out the weekend the Sags would travel to Saint John to take on the Sea Dogs with Lukas being held off the scoresheet but winning 22 of 35 faceoffs.

Ryan Murray-Everett Silvertips(WHL)
Season Stats 15GP 2-12-14 +2 12PIM

The WHL gave Ryan and the Tips a light weekend; but after a two week road trip, they probably didn’t mind that. The team went 1-1 last week with Ryan adding to his career long point streak starting on Friday night which was the first of three Ryan Murray bobblehead night (who’s grabbing me one?). Anyway, on that night Ryan would pick up two assists in the first period of a 6-5 Tips win. The next night, Ryan would pick up an assist on a two on one, in which Ryan would fake a shot sending a perfect pass to Reid Petryk to make it a 2-2 game. Ryan’s point streak is currently at six games with him scoring a goal and nine assists including three multipoint games.

Thomas Larkin-Colgate(ECAC)
Season Stats 7GP 0-2-2 8PIM

Thomas and the Raiders would start the weekend off  against the RIT Tigers with Thomas picking up his second assist (Raiders Rally Past RIT – cant link to just the video for some reason) in as many games with an assist on a Raiders’ power play goal. Thomas plays as a forward on the Raiders power play mainly to put that 6’5″ frame in front as a screen. The next night in a 5-1 win over Quinnipiac, Thomas would be held scoreless.

Martin Ouelette-Maine(Hockey East)
Season Stats 1GP 0-1 3.06GAA .889Sv%

Yes folks you’re reading this right, Martin Ouelette made it into a game! Even with my reports of drama last week, Martin would start Friday night’s game against Providence making 24 saves in the 3-2 loss. The next night Coach Whitehead would go back to Dan Sullivan who didn’t fare much better in a 3-0 loss. October was a ROUGH month for the Black Bears going 1-6-0 only scoring eight goals.

Kevin Lynch-Michigan(CCHA)
Season Stats 5GP 0-3-3 6PIM

The Wolverines would welcome the Miami RedHawks to Yost last weekend with the teams splitting. In the Wolverines win on Friday, Kevin Lynch would be held scoreless. On Saturday night, Kevin would pick his third assist of the season in the Wolverine’s 4-3 loss.

Daniel Zaar-Rogle BK
SEL Stats 6GP 2-0-2 +1 0PIM J20 Stats 9GP 4-5-9 +2 0PIM

For the first time in a while Daniel Zaar would suit up for a J20 game, but not before playing two with the SEL club. In the team’s first game of the week, Daniel would serve as Rogle’s extra forward while actually being listed as a defenseman. According to Jonas Lindeblad, Daniel would barely see the ice and was a -1. In the next game, Zaar would be held off the scoresheet in a 4-3 win over Linkopings HC. On Sunday, Zaar would play his first J20 game since early October picking up two assists in a 11-2 destruction of Huddinge IK. I’m not sure if Zaar will be sticking with the J20 team for now or if it was because both the main club and the J20 team were home this weekend.

Anton Forsberg-Sodertalje Sk
Season Stats 11GP 6-5 2.27GAA .921Sv%

Busy week for SSK as they’d play three games, winning two of them with Anton only being in net for one. First on Tuesday, Anton would get a night off against Mora IK with SSK winning 3-1. In the next game against Oskarshamn, Anton would take the loss stopping 18 of 21 in a 3-1 loss. Anton would bounce back against Djurgardens IF stopping 34 of 36 for his sixth win of the season.

Joonas Korpisalo-Kiekko-Vantaa
Season Stats(Just with Kiekko-Vantaa) 9GP 3-5 2.90GAA .903Sv%

Joonas Korpisalo was with Kiekko-Vantaa this week and he even had a whole day off where he wouldn’t dress for any of the three Jokerit teams. Starting off on Wednesday, Joonas would start against Sport or Hockey-Team Vaasan Sport Oy (if you wanna get technical about it). In KV’s 6-2 win Joonas would make 26 saves for his first win since September. The team’s next game against Leki is the game Joonas would get completely off before starting in a game  against HCK. Joonas would stop 21 of 24 in a 5-1 loss with Joonas not being in net for the two HCK empty netters. It was announced today that Joonas would be part of the Finnish entry in the 4 Nations Tournament in November which according to Eetu Huisman (my Jokerit source) that “Everyone on that roster has a spot that is his to lose in the WJC”.

Well that’s it folks. Another week of hockey being played by CBJ prospects. Don’t forget you can get the most recent updates by following me on twitter. See you next week!
