Moala, a second-round selection in the 2009 NFL Draft from the University of Southern California, didn’t start last season and neither did he play extensively. But he may be the key to whether the area can improve significantly next season.
Although selected late in the second round in 2009, had he opted to forgo his senior season, many draft analysts projected him as a potential Top 10 overall selection. That’s the sort of ability Moala has and if he can turn that potential into production, the Colts could have another front-line player at a position at which they already have three solid players with extensive experience.
The Colts last season entered the season with Antonio Johnson and Ed Johnson as the starters, but after they released Ed Johnson in October, Dan Muir moved into the starting lineup and the pair helped the run defense improved dramatically from the previous season. While the Colts’ run defense statistics were relatively similar last season to the season before, they were significantly better until the final two games of the season. That was when they played starters relatively sparingly, and allowed the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills big rushing numbers in Indianapolis’ lone two losses of the season.
