Who will make the roster? My bet is Clark, Eldrige, Tamme and Robinson
Eldridge caught just 13 passes for 98 yards at Oklahoma, and while Colts President Bill Polian and Head Coach Jim Caldwell each said his blocking is well ahead of his receiving, Polian said that’s very much OK.
“He’s physical, tough (and) can move you,” Polian said. “He runs a 4.73 (40-yard dash), which isn’t bad by tight end standards. He doesn’t have a lot of experience in the passing part of the game, but that’s not what we were overly interested in at that point. We were looking for someone who can improve the blocking at the point of the attack, both in short-yardage and goal line, and in our basic double-tight end packages.
“We’re quite satisfied that he can do that, and we’re anxious to have him.”
With Eldridge likely having every chance to contribute immediately, the competition for time between he and Robinson likely will be an intriguing storyline in the coming months.
Elsewhere at tight end, Jacob Tamme seems assured a roster spot. He not only is one of the Colts’ top special teams players, he plays a similar style to Clark and has the potential to fill in there if Clark is out. Third-year TE Tom Santi has missed extensive time with injuries in two seasons, and probably needs a healthy, solid camp and season to be a factor for the Colts much longer.
