As much as a keen eye and brilliant football mind, what makes Polian an elite-level executive is an unflinching focus on organization, and an equally unflinching belief that the system will work.
Those last two attributes are what’s important when discussing how the Colts approach the NFL Draft, because as much as the keen eye – which unquestionably Polian has when it comes to scouting players (and not all GMs have “it” on that front) – what has enabled the Colts to succeed in the draft is an unerring belief in their plan.
The Colts’ scouting process is a detailed system, the aim of which Polian often has said is to remove as much of the guesswork as possible. Polian often over the years has told me he tells scouts he doesn’t want to hear phrases from scouts such as “my gut tells” me or “I like this guy . . .” What Polian wants to hear is hard data, and as many measurables and real information as possible.
The system, Polian has said, is examined each season, with the idea to annually improve it, but Polian and the Colts have used it long enough that there is little guesswork.
