Break out the champaign glasses, because it’s another edition of Oh Say Did UC. In case you don’t know, it’s the great feature where we compile what’s been newsworthy in the last week for Cincinnati Bearcat athletics. We start with sending our best wishes to West Virginia head man Bob Huggins, who fell and broke 7 ribs. He must have fallen on a bowling ball or something. Last I heard, he was still in the hospital, so we won’t make jokes at his expense.
We will make fun of Louisville head coach Rick Pitino. He testified in his very serious extortion trial when asked about if he had sex with Karen Sypher, “Yes, very briefly.” Now that’s kinda funny while reading it, but imagine news reporters saying it and try not to laugh. Quick draw Pitino will probably win his case, but in the end, his 15 second freshman in high school length sex, will be a loss. I also don’t believe the down his leg thing either. In all seriousness, this trial is heinous and disgusting. Matt Jones of KSR has been at the trial, and is killing it with his coverage.
Let’s start with some bad news. Brandon Carswell, who said himself he was coming to UC, has now said he’s staying at USC. This isn’t a huge shock. UC has roughly 10,000 receivers, and Carswell would probably not see a ton of playing time this season. Oh well.
Good news, Brian Bennett touched on 3 fresh faces around the UC football team. If you are so lazy not to click on the link, they are new center junior Evan Davis, Vidal Hazelton, and freshman WR Dyjuan Lewis.
Zach Collaros is on the Manning Award watch list. I never heard of this award either, but hey, it’s nice for Zach to be honored.
I’m linking to this gambling website as a way to link to every preview that is coming out. Cappers picks thinks UC will go 9-4. Something like that seems to be the consensus. Pittsburgh, West Virginia and UConn are the betting favorites, with the Bearcats hanging around 4th. People talk a little about the defense sucking at the end of the season, and Tony Pike being a Carolina Panther, but if Brian Kelly was still at UC, they would be in the top 15. Hell, Notre Dame is in many of these top 25 polls, and they sucked ass last season. Some sites have UC in the 40s, which I think is a little low. I think they deserve some credit for last season.
The September 25 Cincinnati v. Oklahoma game is getting a lot of hype, including from the Tulsa World, as one of the top non conference games of the season. This list is Big 12 related, but check out the other 4 anyway.
Ricardo Matthews NFL dream came true officially today, as he signed with the Indianapolis Colts. Matthews was a 7th round pick. It’s expected he will spend this season on the practice squad.
Former Bearcat Hakuri Nakamura has a blog detailing his NFL preseason experience. Even though he plays for the Ravens, I’m happy to see him make a difference in the NFL.
Speaking of making a difference, Mardy Gilyard got a good write up at the bottom of this article on the Telegraph site. It sounds like Mardy is excited for St Louis, and St Louis is excited for Mardy.
Let’s hit 2 recruiting things in one swoop. First, the Bearcats landed a commitment from 6’6, 230 lb lineman Chad West. Chad will have to bulk up some, but I’m sure he’ll make an impact at UC next season. Second, UC is apparently the favorite for, guess what position, that’s right WR Chris Moore. Moore had nearly 800 yards receiving last season, and as the article says, tore up the spring jamboree. I’m guessing the spring jamboree is something football related.
In basketball news, IPFW plays a tough non conference schedule, highlighted by a trip through Cincinnati. The article states that X will have no problem with the Dons, but apparently UC will. If IPFW is within 15 at the 6 minute mark, I’ll buy whoever wrote this article a hooker. Or a steak. Or a soda. Or probably forget I wrote this by the time November rolls around.
Nunes Magician, which is great and happy belated birthday, expands on the Fanhouse article saying how the Big East/SEC invitational is certainly coming to an end this year. I went to this event last season in Cincinnati, and it was alright. Louisville and Cincinnati playing the Mississippi schools was fun for me as fan of Louisville and Cincinnati, but this was the best they could do? This year, Kentucky plays Notre Dame, Arkansas plays Seton Hall, and Auburn plays Rutgers and Tennessee plays Pittsburgh. Auburn v. Rutgers sucks out loud. Pitt v. Tenn might be one of the best games of the Invitational, but that’s the rare exception to the normal Arkansas v. Seton Hall suck.
Former UC great (should I have said very good? Nah, that doesn’t sound right) Kenny Satterfield has a nickname. It’s Serious Satellite. Why do I mention this? Because Kenny won the Red Bull 2on2 Revolution tournament in NYC this past weekend. Sat collected 2 grand. His partner was former Sacramento King Nakiea Miller. Yeah, I never heard of him either. Thanks to Dime, here is Kenny in action.
Where is the headband indeed.
