Thanks to the bye week, it’s time to get caught up on all the news happening around the universe. Mainly America. First off, how fucking awesome was the Reds game last night? It was one of the best games that I have ever watched. I knew they were going to win in the bottom of the 9th, and I knew it would be on a homer. First fucking pitch, Jay Bruce blasts it to center. I’ll link to the video. I watched every interview from the postgame celebration. Nothing in sports is better than having your faith rewarded.
We’ll start with some basketball news.
The Bearcats have reinstated Rashad Bishop. Not very surprising. Cronin said Bishop is in the “best shape of his career,” and “understands the provisions.” I’d rather him be in the best shape of his career in November, but you get the point.
The Bearcats landed Jermaine Sanders to the class of 2011. He’s the 31st ranked wing, and left handed. The Bearcats also have SF Shaquille Thomas, PF Octavivous Ellis, and PG Ge-Lawn Guyn coming in. Adam Zagoria suggests all they need is another big. Looks like Mick has a very nice class coming in next season. Zagoria also reports they are in for PG Maurice Aniefok. I should probably post recruiting news as it happens for hits and page views and stuff. It would be smart.
Paul Daughtery wrote about how Mick has to serve the masters of winning and winning properly. He wrote that for SI, not the Enquirer. I’m sure everyone at SI loves reading about a middle of the road Big East coach. Ass bag.
Football time.
The Bearcats added a couple of secondary transfers for next season. Patrick White comes from Michigan State, the reverse Dantonio, and Isaac Johnson from Boston College. Both are pretty solid, at least they were coming out of HS, but didn’t like it at their schools. Obviously. They will be corner and safety, which are the only two secondary positions they can play.
The starting time for the Miami game Oct 9 has been announced, and it’s 7 PM. Sadly, it’s only available on ESPN3.com. I like ESPN3, but also hate ESPN3 because ESPN is pulling things off tv and sticking them online so cable companies are forced to add ESPN3, just like they did for ESPNU.
Some guy for the News Record wrote a nice little article about how the Bearcats are dealing with the bye.
A couple things from Brian Bennett. 1, he says UC gained something against OU. 2, he says the way UC played, they can’t be counted out of the Big East. And he has Zach Collaros and JK Schaffer second in his Big East Player of the Year race.
This doesn’t have much to do directly with Cincinnati football, but there have been rumors of TCU joining the Big East. This follows rumors of Villanova becoming a full member. I would like to see both join, and the Big East have a 10 team league. They could still play everyone and have a true champion. If not Nova, I would still be open to Memphis or Central Florida joining the league. There is no way to cut it, the conference sucks this season. There are no teams ranked in the AP for the first time since 1995. The good news is that every fanbase has talked themselves into thinking their team can pull out the conference. It’s incredibly hard to rank the teams in the conference, as you’ll find out with my Big East power rankings, which will go up tomorrow or Friday.
Here are a couple other UC links before we move on to the rest of the Big East.
The Cincinnati Volleyball team is up to #22 in the poll, nearly their highest ranking ever, after crushing Seton Hall and Rutgers last weekend. They play St John’s and Connecticut this weekend. Stephanie Niemer, my bff, is the Big East player of the week for the 3rd straight week. All of this is off the backs of them following me on twitter. That wasn’t a link, but hey, shout out to the ladies. I’m going to try to get an interview somehow.
Also, the men’s soccer teams plays the hated Xavier Musketeers tonight at 7. Go root them on, and yell at Xavier for having horrible basketball uniforms.
Around the Big East
We’ll start with Syracuse, because I went to Nunes’ first. They have a look at the tale of two running backs, Delone Carter and Andrew Bailey. Also, Sean has an great look at the TCU rumors. Orange 44 has reactions from the latest win over a division 2 school.
Louisville suffered a huge blow this week when WR Doug Beaumont hurt his knee and is out indefinitely. He’s their only stable receiving threat, and losing him is a crushing loss.
Speaking of crushing losses, our friends at On the Banks have a write up of the North Carolina loss. They also have a post about how their incoming recruits did this past week if you are into that sort of thing.
Our Bloguin friends, and friends in general, at Pitt Script post how the great offensive line shuffle has started for the Panthers. Hopefully, theirs goes worse than ours did.
Voodoo 5 breaks down the awful USF win against Western Kentucky. They also have the results for the Protect Your Unit game, in which I’m third. The Smoking Musket has a coach approval poll this week, and the numbers aren’t good.
Three UConn things. From UC Huskies, here are highlights of the Buffalo victory. From the Hartford Courant, the Huskies have put the reinstated Cody Endres in at starter. From the UConn Blog, news of the fight between kick Dave Teggart and LB Jerome Williams. That doesn’t seem like it could have gone well for Teggart. Those are the links for this week. Thanks for reading friends.
