Update on the 1977 Strat-O-Matic replay Pirates after the jump.

With the Pirates dropping below .500 for the first time this season and no updates for the better part of a month month, I figured now would be a good time to mention that the flash-sideways 1977 Pirates that are nominally ghost-managed by me for Play that Funky Baseball have regained first place thanks to a two-game sweep of the previous holder of that position, the LA Dodgers. Ol’ Scrap Iron was the catalyst for the sweep with a walkoff homer in one game and a two-run jack in the second.

There are a whole bunch of stats posted today, and you can see that so far the pitchers in the league have ignored by warning to beware of the Cobra; through 21 games Dave Parker is hitting .426 with a 1.156 OPS and 20 ribbies, while Bill Robinson leads the league with 21 RBIs and Willie Stargell, Al Oliver, and Rennie Stennett are all killing the ball as well. The pitching staff doesn’t show up on the leaderboard much besides the Candy Man’s stellar ERA and Goose Gossage’s 4 saves, but they’re only allowing about four runs per game (85 runs allowed is the second fewest in the NL).

Am I mildly concerned that the Dodgers run differential is much different than the Buccos’? Of course not! This is 1977. No one knows what a pythagorean record is. Onwards towards the pennant, boys.
