Urban Meyer hasn’t wasted any time targeting some of the best high school players from across the country in the 2013 class. The quarterbacks are no exception.
The Buckeyes have numerous offers out to 2013 QBs already, and it looks like at least two will eventually join the class.
The foundation of the class, as always, will be built around Ohio players, and there are some good ones to choose from.
Mentor’s Mitch Trubisky was offered this weekend, joining Malik Zaire out of Alter as Ohio quarterbacks with early offers.
Although he currently lacks an offer, Tra’Von Chapman is another in-state player out of Kent Roosevelt that is heavily in the mix.
Along with the group of local players, the staff has also targeted and offered some of the top QBs from across the nation just to keep things interesting.
At the tippy top of the wish list is five star prospect Tyrone Swoopes out of Texas, who is currently ranked the 11th best overall player in the country by Rivals.
The probability that Swoopes attends Ohio State is next to zero, but he does have an offer and an extremely impressive highlight film.
After viewing said film, wish Tyrone luck at one of the Texas schools and move on to other players.
You don’t even have to leave the longhorn state to move on to J.T. Barrett, another elite Texas QB with an early offer.
Barrett plans to camp in Columbus this summer, so that bumps him up from “no chance” to something higher.
Also on the radar are the southern duo of Darryl Richardson and Johnathan McCrary.
Both were offered by the previous coaching staff, and based on the flurry of new offers, continuing interest from the new staff seems to be minimal. That could change, but right now it looks like the Buckeyes have higher (and more realistic) priorities.
Speaking of southern QBs with a less than realistic chance of being Buckeyes, Georgia quarterback Brice Ramsey has an offer.
Ramsey is already committed to Georgia, and unless he visits Columbus, he won’t even be making an appearance on the big board.
Still, that recruitment proves that Meyer isn’t afraid to go after his top players regardless of the circumstances. Cue the tears from the rest of the Big Ten coaches.
Finally, there is Illinois four-star QB Aaron Bailey, who was in Columbus this past weekend but left without an offer.
Bailey will return to Columbus to camp this summer and will likely have a chance to earn an offer at that time.
If I had to guess, I would say that every QB on the board will be competing for a roster spot at camp this summer, regardless of whether they received an early offer or not.
The players without offers will be working to earn a spot in the class… unless the players with offers commit first.
Once again, this is purely speculation on my part, but the philosophy seems to be “commit now or compete for your spot this summer.”
Given Meyer’s comments about competitiveness in his players (he wants kids that get fired up over a game of checkers), it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that was his pitch to the 2013 QBs.
Zaire and Trubisky have the inside track right now, but Chapman, Bailey, and Barrett (along with any other QBs that are offered or camp this summer) will be gunning for those two spots.
