I saw two games this week: the Peterborough Petes vs the Oshawa Generals, and the Kitchener Rangers. The Petes-Rangers game was watched on TV.
All players are first time draft eligible unless stated otherwise.
Generals
Domenic Commisso – C
I’ve seen Commisso twice now and neither time did he stand out. He’s playing on Oshawa’s fourth line, which doesn’t appear to be getting much ice at all. Looking at CHLStats.com Commisso is estimated to play just 5 and 50 seconds a game. At this point unless Commisso gets a big boost in ice time and starts producing, he’s a non-prospect.
Michael Dal Colle – LW (Islanders 5th Overall 2014)
I was very interested in Dal Colle as he has been one of the biggest underachievers thus far in the OHL. In 11 games he has yet to score and only has five assists. In this game I thought he did a real good job of driving play and getting shots. He had four shots, which was tied for third on the team. What stood out to me though was that Dal Colle wasn’t dynamic at all. He isn’t a flashy player by any means but Dal Colle did not make any creative plays. He’s dealing with some poor shooting luck, but stay tuned once he gets that first goal or two that creativity will return and Dal Colle will be back to being one of the best players in the league.
Kenny Huether – RW (Re-entry)
With just the one first time draft eligible player I decided to look at a player who was passed over last year and Huether stood out right away. He skated on the Generals top line with Dal Colle and Tampa Bay third round pick Anthony Cirrelli. He is a fast skater, who was just flying up and down the ice. I didn’t see enough of his other skills to get a feel for them, but his stats look great. He didn’t get many shots against the Petes, but does lead the Gens on the season with 4.5 per game. He is also second on the team in scoring with 12 points. He is someone to keep an eye on as a possible re-entry pick.
Notes
Riley Stillman who I scouted previously was not in the lineup.
Rangers
Adam Mascherin – LW
Mascherin the second overall pick in the OHL draft last year, is leading a very good Kitchener Rangers team. Kitchener is currently the best possession team in the OHL with an estimated Fenwick Close of 55.96% per CHLStats.com. Mascherin is a big reason for that. His line seemingly never left the offensive zone. They combined for 15 of the Rangers 32 shots. Mascherin has great vision and awareness offensively so he’s able to set up great chances. He also has a very good snapshot when he does decide to shoot it.
Connor Bunnaman – C
Bunnaman plays a much more physical and grinder type game than Mascherin. Bunnaman has good size at 6’1, 207 and makes nice use of it. He was physical throwing quite a few hits. Offensively he was focused on getting the puck deep and establishing the cycle. He wasn’t great on the cycle as the Petes were able to match his size and Bunnaman didn’t appear to have the skills or creatively to try and mix it up.
Peterborough
Jonathan Ang – C
Last time I said I wanted Ang to shoot more and I think the Petes coaching staff had the same idea. Ang was definitely looking for the shot more against the Gens. He was rewarded for this change in approach with two goals. The first goal he got a good pass right outside the crease and with the goalie down roofed in tight over him. The second one he was trialing the rush and snuck into the slot alone and semi slapped it home. His Corsi in the game was +17/-19 for 47%.
Adam Timleck – RW
Timleck continues to impress with how he gets into great scoring areas. His hard work was rewarded against Oshawa as he scored a goal off a rebound from a point shot. He is going to score quite a few goals if he continues to get to that area of the ice.
Matt Timms – D
I decided to track Corsi for Timms as well as Ang. Timms was +14/-16 for 47%. The thing that hurt Timms was Oshawa got chances in bunches. They would get a shot off the rush then everyone would crash the net and they would get a couple chances before the Petes goalie covered it up. The best way to prevent this would be for Timms to break up the initial rush. I am going to be keeping a close eye on this in the future.
