Old friends

Great article in the Star this morning about Bullitt and Lacey.  Nice work by Phil B.

They came together for the first time as pros with a prime-time crunch of Cardinals receiver Steve Breaston. Lacey lifted the elevated receiver from below. Bullitt drilled Breaston high just 1 yard from the end zone. It saved a touchdown in the final minute of the second quarter. On the next play, Antoine Bethea intercepted a pass in the end zone.

“I enjoyed it immensely,” said Bullitt’s father, Jerry, 48, watching at home. “I can’t tell you how much. Our phones were ringing off the hook on that one. It was extremely remarkable to see that play.”

He was not alone.

“The phone calls haven’t stopped,” said Lacey’s mother, Francine, 48. “Getting to the NFL, the same team, it has defied all odds.

“Then stopping that big boy from getting into the end zone, I loved it. I don’t have a word to describe how I feel about it. I have to pinch myself and say, ‘Yes, we are really here.’ “

The Bullitt and Lacey “families love each other,” Francine said. They actually met on opposite sides. Jerry Bullitt coached a peewee team and Lacey was an opposing running back.
