On Notice: College Football Upset Alerts for Week Two

Last week we talked with our buddy Matt Elder of the scouting website BuffaloBillsDraft.com. Matt has an extensive knowledge of small school (as well as FBS) knowledge. One of the questions we asked him was “what are the three games that you think have the biggest potential for upset involving a FBS vs FCS match-up.” Matt gave us Virginia/William & Mary, NC State/Liberty and Duke/Richmond. He went one out of three as Richmond pulled the upset of Duke. But when you are talking about an FCS team beating an FBS team that’s pretty good in my book. Both Matt and I had a lot of fun with the piece so we decided to make it a weekly thing (at least until some pissed off fanbase comes after us and our families with pitchforks). Since this is week two there aren’t as many FCS vs FBS games so we opened it up to FBS vs FBS games as well. Here’s who Matt put “On Notice” with his week two upset alerts:

Im back again this week to try and find more upsets that are brewing in college football. Last week I went 1 for 3 in picking FCS over FBS upsets so this week I have 1 FCS over FBS pick along with 2 FBS teams I’m putting firmly on upset alert.

Stony Brook over Buffalo

If you don’t know who Stony Brook is, talk to a UTEP fan because they gave the Miners one heck of a scare last week. They did it by running all over the Miner defense for 231 total rushing yards. That also happens to be the exact amount of yardage UB surrendered last week to Pitt. UB will need to find a way to stop the Stony Brook rushing attack and will need to rely heavily on the legs and arm of Chazz Anderson if they hope to escape with a win.

Utah over USC (USC is a 9.5 point favorite)

Everybody is buying hard into the Trojans after what Matt Barkley and Robert Woods did to the Gophers on Saturday. What they are all choosing not to look at is the fact that Minnesota had the ball with a chance to win on Saturday. USC has big time issues running the football and gained only 67 total yards against a Minnesota defense that surrendered an average of 146 last year. Utah on the other hand played a nice tune-up game v. Montana State and was able to develop a well balanced attack that should give USC fits. Utah had 5 pass breakups and 2 INT’s against Montana State and if they can be that active against the Trojans look for the upset.

Arizona over Oklahoma State (Cowboys are a 14 point favorite)

Oklahoma State allowed Louisiana-Lafayette to score 34 points and their starting QB Brandon Weeden threw 3 INT’s in what was an ugly win over the Rajin Cajuns. Oklahoma State was able to successfully run the ball v. ULL and they will need that if Weeden continues his struggles against the Wildcats. Unlike Oklahoma State’s starting QB, Arizona starting QB Nick Foles started off on fire throwing for over 400 yards and 5 TD’s. If Foles gets clicking again it could be an early season upset for the Cowboys.
