Record-setting All-Star Game online voting concludes with Ted Williams MVP Award
ST. LOUIS, July 14, 2009 – Following a combined 292.1 million online votes cast during the balloting for the elected starters and the All-Star Game Final Vote, MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, will once again provide a worldwide baseball audience the annual opportunity to participate in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award at the 80th All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis tonight via the 2009 All-Star Game MVP Vote.
Beginning in the sixth inning of tonight’s Midsummer Classic, fans may cast their votes for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award online exclusively at MLB.com. The voting will continue until the MVP is announced immediately following the conclusion of the game.
The MLB.com fan vote will count for 20 percent of the total with the other 80 percent coming on location at Busch Stadium from the All-Star Game’s three broadcast rightsholders: FOX Sports, ESPN Radio and MLB International as well as the Baseball Writers Association of America.
Immediately following the conclusion of the All-Star Game, the Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player will receive the Arch Ward Trophy, which was first presented in 1962 as a tribute to Ward, the founder of the All-Star Game in 1933. Some recent winners of the award include J.D. Drew, Ichiro Suzuki, Michael Young, Derek Jeter and Alfonso Soriano.
