One crazy & wet night in Miami

Tuesday night’s game had: * Claudio Vargas making his first start of the year for the Brewers…and fanning 9 over 5 IP…and allowing only 1 ER * Rick Vanden Hurk, a rookie pitcher for the Marlins, making his MLB debut…and fanning 5 over 4 2/3rds IP…and allowing 1 ER * A pair of rain delays, pushing the game past 11 p.m. ET * A 3-for-3 night by Prince Fielder…to instantly add himself to the .300 club (.303) * An 0-for-4 night by Marlin third baseman Miguel Cabrera * Craig Counsell batting leadoff…and getting thrown out at the plate * A spectacular at-the-wall leaping catch by Corey Hart in the 8th to rob Marlins’ first baseman Mike Jacobs of any extra base hit Yet, despite all this, the Crew took a 2-1 deficit into the 9th…Weeks leadoff the inning with a walk off closer Jorge Julio…after Counsell flew out to right, J.J. Hardy hit a ground rule double to center to plate Weeks to tie the game. Julio opts to walk Fielder to get to Hall, who nubbed a softee to third, which Cabrera fielded cleanly to first to erase Hall, but which also advanced Hardy to third and Fielder to second. Alas, catcher Johnny Estrada smashed the first pitch deep to left, ony to get robbed on a great defensive play by Marlins leftfielder Josh Willingham, who got turned around, but still managed to snare the flyball at the warning track. Yost opted for former closer Derrick “Rock Star” Turnbow in the 9th…and Turnbow delivered, fanning two of the three Marlins’ hitters. So, add “extra innings” to the list. In the 10th, Jenkins started it off with his third single of the night, followed by a Corey Hart sacrifice bunt. Kevin Mench came in to pinch-hit for Turnbow, and popped out to short center. So, Rickie Weeks comes in…and drives an 0-1 pitch deep to left, only to have Marlin rightfielder catch it at the warning track. Yost opts for Greg Aquino to pitch the 10th…Aquino is the 6th pitcher, and 5th reliever for the night, leaving only Coco Cordero and Elmer Dessens left in the bullpen. Aquino retires the side…and the umps give in and call for the tarps…for a third time, around 11:35 ET. Gauging by the radar, I’m guessing that they’ll finish this one up on Wednesday…as for me, I’m going to bed.
