One Fan(n)'s Opinion by @rdotdeuce: Cordy Glenn Gets P-A-I-D

With the 2016 season looming and three of the four “cornerstone” positions on one year deals (LT-CB-QB), the Bills took a great step forward, extending Cordy Glenn to a 5 year deal.

In terms of cap relief – going from a 13.706 million dollar cap hit to what I’d guess for now is a 6-7 million dollar hit in year one is huge for the Bills. With the way the Bills have set up big deals in the past, I’d expect most of that to be a combination of signing bonus and roster/option bonuses in subsequent years as checks to ensure they can get out of it if he goes south. The 26-year old now averages 13 million a year, good for 2nd for LT’s.

I’m a big fan of Cordy and have been from his time in Georgia. Selfishly, he’s also one of #UncleBuddy’s true “guys” – like Gilmore – that can be attributed to Nix without the stigma of “he was asleep” yadda yadda that occurs with the 2013 draftees and the trade for Jerry Hughes. The gamble of hoping that the rest of the NFL would fall for the smoke that Glenn was a guard/right tackle only was a masterstroke by the smooth southerner and while he wasn’t perfect, he did provide Buffalo with 3 of their four key positions – Glenn, Gilmore and Mario Williams pre-Rex.

Up next? Stephon Gilmore and Tyrod Taylor. I’d also argue to add Sammy Watkins to that list as well. If Buffalo doesn’t want to “overpay” for impending FA’s they have to adopt an approach similar to the Philadelphia Eagles – signing players early in their deals when they see the talent. However, if the Bills want to keep cheap labor and balk when said labor wants to be paid commensurate to their talent, it may lead to “squeaky bum time” for some of those players.

But that’s the future – right now is a time to celebrate the Bills and Glenn’s representatives getting the job done. Kudos to both.
